Amidst a dynamic global economy, Batam City has found new momentum as a Favorite Destination for Singaporean tourists. Its geographical proximity, rapid transportation access, and shopping and culinary experiences tailored to Southeast Asian urban tastes have solidified Batam's position as a weekend getaway destination.
The Batam City Culture and Tourism Office (Disbudpar) views Singapore's economic situation as a strategic opportunity. The strengthening Singapore dollar and shifting work climate in the Lion City are driving its residents to seek more affordable holiday destinations without sacrificing comfort.
Batam Disbudpar Head Ardiwinata noted this trend is reflected in the surge of Tourist Visits from Singapore throughout 2025.

"Singapore is indeed in such a situation, but Alhamdulillah Foreign Tourist (Foreign Tourist) visits to Batam have actually increased. Last December we were optimistic about surpassing the 1.5 million foreign tourist target," said Ardiwinata when contacted in Batam, Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data supports this statement. Throughout 2025, Singaporean tourist visits to Batam showed a positive annual trend with an increase of approximately 10,000 visits.
September 2025 recorded around 63,000 tourists, October rose to 67,000, and November reached 65,000. These figures exceed the same period in 2024, when visits were around 52,000 in September, 53,000 in October, and 58,000 in November.
To seize this opportunity, the Batam City Government is maximizing shopping and Creative Economy sectors as main attractions. Local micro and small enterprise (UKM) products, especially fashion and culinary, are being prepared to compete and meet Singaporean tourists' tastes.
"We're preparing Dekranasda (Regional National Craft Council) Batam as a creative economy hub. We're boosting fashion and culinary products through quality enhancement, branding, and packaging," he stated.
This effort is strengthened through collaboration with tourism industry players, including the Indonesian Travel Tour Companies Association (ASITA) and Indonesian Marine Tourism Association (ASPABRI), to develop tour packages more relevant to Singapore's market needs.
According to Ardiwinata, Nusantara Cuisine is a primary magnet for Singaporean tourists. Authentic Indonesian dishes offer sensations hard to find in their home country.
"They actively seek Nusantara cuisine like Padang rice, smashed fried chicken. Indian tourists also look for dishes like kebuli rice. Singaporean housewives always seek Batam's typical snacks, crackers, and packaged foods," he explained.
Beyond shopping and culinary, Batam is strengthening Religious Tourism and cultural experiences. The Batam Center Grand Mosque is now included in foreign tourists' itineraries, alongside improved city facilities and accessibility.
Infrastructure support plays a crucial role. The operation of Gold Coast Ferry Terminal and enhanced domestic/international flight connectivity make Batam more accessible for short trips and family holidays.
"Batam's infrastructure has become increasingly robust with continuously improving air and sea connectivity," he added.
With these enhancements, the Batam City Government views 2026 optimistically. A target of 1.75 million foreign tourist visits has been set, aiming to establish Batam as a shopping, culinary, and urban tourism hub in western Indonesia.
