Malaysia has reaffirmed its dominance as the most popular tourist destination in the Southeast Asian region. Throughout the first half of 2026, the neighbouring nation recorded 21.12 million international tourist arrivals, while retaining its status as the most visited country within the ASEAN bloc.
This achievement confirms Malaysia's tourism sector remains on a positive growth trend. International visitor numbers rose 2.5 percent compared to the same period last year, and have even surpassed tourism performance recorded before the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to data from Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, total arrivals between January and June 2026 were 17.7 percent higher than the equivalent period in 2019.

This figure acts as a strong indicator that Malaysia's tourism industry has fully recovered and continues to expand.
This success did not occur by accident. Various promotional strategies rolled out by the government have been credited with sustaining Malaysia's appeal to international travellers.
Citing a report from The Star, this growth was driven by the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, improved regional flight connectivity, strengthened domestic tourism operations, hosting of multiple international events, alongside increasingly diverse destination marketing efforts.
Tourist markets from fellow ASEAN states remain the backbone of arrivals to Malaysia. This region contributed approximately 72.8 percent of all foreign visitors arriving during the first six months of the year.
Singapore continues to be the single largest source of tourists for Malaysia. Arrivals from this neighbouring nation increased 4.4 percent compared to the previous 12 month period.
Meanwhile, markets that were previously less prominent have posted the most dramatic growth. Visitor arrivals from Cambodia rose 52.3 percent, Myanmar increased 45.9 percent, while Laos recorded 25.4 percent growth.
Outside the ASEAN bloc, East Asian markets demonstrated solid recovery with overall growth reaching 12.7 percent.
Central Asia recorded a 23.3 percent arrival increase, followed by Oceania at 7.4 percent and the Americas which grew 4.9 percent.
China remains one of Malaysia's largest international tourism markets. Rising visitor numbers from China have been supported by visa exemption policies and targeted tourism promotion campaigns.
Malaysia's leading performance has made the competitive landscape of Southeast Asian tourism increasingly notable to observe.
Thailand, long recognised as one of the region's major tourism hubs, placed second with a total of 16.7 million international tourists between January and June 2026.
However this figure marks a 3.09 percent decline compared to the same period last year, meaning Thailand has not yet overtaken Malaysia at the top of ASEAN's destination rankings.
Vietnam recorded the most impressive growth among major regional nations. The country received 12.3 million international tourists, representing a 14.9 percent year-on-year jump.
Singapore ranked fourth with 8.12 million foreign visitors, down 1.7 percent due to slowing arrival rates from key markets including Indonesia and India.
Indonesia placed fifth on the list of most visited countries for international travellers in Southeast Asia.
Based on data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS), international tourist arrivals to the country between January and June 2026 totalled 7.45 million, marking a 5.71 percent increase over the same period the previous year.
Notably, Malaysian tourists were the largest single source of arrivals to Indonesia in June 2026, accounting for 18.66 percent of all visitors that month.
This was followed by visitors from Singapore at 12.25 percent and Australia at 12.08 percent.
