Indonesia is currently placing serious attention on the Saudi Arabian tourist market, a segment deemed to hold significant potential for national tourism growth. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) observes that Saudi tourists' characteristics—preferring family travel, luxury accommodations, and extended stays (long-stay)—can generate substantial economic impact.
Kemenparekraf's Deputy Minister of Marketing, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, stated that the government is collaborating with Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj to optimize tourist flows to Indonesia.
"We're currently cooperating with the Ministry of Hajj on this. The goal is to redirect them to visit Indonesia. Frankly, until now they primarily know Bali, perhaps Jakarta or West Java," Made explained.

The Hajj season serves as a strategic opportunity since Saudi tourists often combine pilgrimage with vacations abroad. Indonesia aims to broaden their destination awareness beyond Bali or Puncak, promoting other regions offering nature, cultural experiences, and high-quality services.
Cool Nature, Luxury Hotels, and Scenic Experiences
According to Made, Saudi tourists exhibit specific preferences. They typically spend generously on international-standard hotels.
"For instance, in Bali they choose places like St. Regis or Jumeirah—seven-star properties. They seek luxury services without hesitation, which is normal for them," she clarified.
Beyond premium accommodations, green landscapes and cool weather strongly appeal to them, contrasting with Saudi Arabia's desert environment. Consequently, cooler regions like Puncak, Bandung, and Malang are favored destinations.
"They adore rain—when we get drenched, they want to watch. They enjoy charming experiences," said Rusmiati, Chairperson of the Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies Association (ASITA).
She recalled taking Saudi tourists to Pelabuhan Ratu where they relished simple car rides without special transport requests. Besides weather, they appreciate authentic cuisine perceived as healthy and destinations highlighting natural elements like oceans, green forests, and rural ambiance.
Economic Opportunity from Long-Stay Trend
Unlike many tourists, Saudis frequently choose extended vacations. This long-stay trend could significantly benefit tourism sectors including accommodations, restaurants, shopping centers, and local attractions.
Their big-spender nature also positions Saudi Arabia as a high-potential market for boosting Indonesia's tourism revenue.
Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data shows Saudi tourist arrivals reached 135,643 in 2024—still below the 2019 peak of 157,512 visitors.
Despite trailing pre-pandemic levels, this gap indicates substantial growth potential. Through intensified promotion and deeper understanding of Saudi preferences, Indonesia can strengthen its position as a prime destination for the Middle Eastern market.
