Sianok Canyon Targets UNESCO Global Geopark Status: West Sumatra to the World

The green canyon in Bukittinggi that cleaves through the Minangkabau highlands holds more than mere beauty. Sianok Canyon is advancing toward global recognition as part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, not only affirming its geological significance but also safeguarding natural and Cultural Heritage preserved for centuries.
From the heights of Panorama Lubang Jepang, a stunning landscape unfolds. Steep cliffs, meandering river streams, and verdant valleys stretch endlessly.
"We propose upgrading the Minangkabau Geosite in the Sianok Canyon area. Once elevated from national to UNESCO Global status, it will become a world landmark," stated Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana.

For the government, UNESCO recognition transcends prestige—it’s a gateway to global attention.
"This will attract more Foreign Tourists, similar to destinations like Lake Toba Tourism in North Sumatra," she added.
Preparations for this recognition are intensifying. Regional authorities and international verification teams are compiling required documentation.
Mayor Ramlan Nurmatias emphasized the area’s robust foundation for global acknowledgment.
"Sianok Canyon deserves worldwide recognition. Its geological and cultural authenticity remains impeccably preserved. We’ve fulfilled all prerequisites for UN submission next year," Ramlan affirmed.
This journey encompasses both landscape and narrative. Along the canyon, Lubang Jepang stands as a historical witness, bridging past memories with future Conservation efforts.
Spanning Agam Regency and Bukittinggi City, Sianok Canyon sustains evolving ecosystems, cultures, and stories.
If successful, this canyon will not only be West Sumatra’s pride but also a globally recognized confluence ANTARA humanity and nature.
