East Aceh Regency is developing coastal tourism potential through Idaman Island, located in Kuala Simpang Ulim Village, Simpang Ulim District. With unspoiled natural scenery and its official status as a sea turtle habitat, Idaman Island is projected to become a flagship tourist destination to attract more visitors while improving the welfare of local coastal communities.
Idaman Island offers a distinct travel experience compared to other destinations in Aceh. Its untouched stretches of sand, shady tree cover, fresh coastal air, and calm peaceful atmosphere form the core appeal for visitors.
This area also holds high conservation value, as it serves as a sea turtle nesting ground during specific annual seasons. For this reason, tourism development on Idaman Island will not only prioritise visitor numbers, but also work to preserve the intact coastal ecosystem.

"Idaman Island holds tremendous tourism potential. Its natural beauty remains pristine, the local environment is still well protected, and it carries critical conservation values that must be upheld. Potential like this requires careful, responsible management so it can deliver benefits for local people without destroying the natural balance here," stated Syahril, Head of the East Aceh Regency Tourism, Youth and Sports Office.
Aside from being a suitable family holiday destination, Idaman Island is also considered ideal for general recreation, environmental education programmes and nature conservation activities.
Beyond just beach tourism, Idaman Island is also a well-known popular spot for recreational anglers. This activity also stimulates the local economy through boat rental services, marine transport, and provision of various supplies for visitors.
The East Aceh Regency Government is actively pushing for implementation of the Community Based Tourism model for this site. This framework positions local residents as the primary stakeholders and operators for managing the tourist destination.
"Our expectation is that local people will be at the centre of tourism management here. As visitor numbers grow, the community will gain direct economic benefits through operating transport services, local food stalls, homestays and other small micro-enterprises," he added.
Supported by relatively accessible travel access, well-preserved surroundings, and collaboration between local communities and all relevant stakeholders, Idaman Island has strong potential to become the signature coastal tourism icon of East Aceh Regency in the coming years.
"The potential of Idaman Island is very significant. The key now is collaborative, responsible management that continues to protect natural conservation. We hope this site will grow into a safe, comfortable tourist destination that delivers tangible improvements to the livelihoods of coastal communities," Syahril concluded.
