The Philippines U22's 2-0 victory over Myanmar U-22 in their opening Group C match of the 2025 SEA Games marks an ideal start. This result not only secured three points but also injected confidence ahead of the crucial duel against Indonesia U22, a team considered superior in quality.

Philippines U22 coach, Garrath McPherson, fully recognizes that Indonesia arrives with a more complete squad and more thorough preparation. However, he asserts that his team won't just wait for the opponent's attacks. He believes the momentum from the first match will be valuable capital when facing the Garuda Muda team.

“Indonesia has had more time to prepare, but that isn't always a good thing. Sitting around in the hotel waiting for the match isn't necessarily better than playing, showing good performance, securing three points, and building confidence for that game,” stated McPherson.

Historic Momentum and Semi-final Scenario

The win over Myanmar was considered a surprise, given that the Philippines is rarely a favorite in Southeast Asian age-group tournaments. Moreover, this result came precisely on the 15th anniversary of the 'Miracle of Hanoi', the iconic moment when the senior Philippines team defeated Vietnam in 2010.

A positive result against Indonesia now holds greater significance. Three points would keep alive the chance for direct qualification to the semi-finals without needing to rely on the best runner-up position. This makes the match against Indonesia one of the decisive factors for their tournament fate.

Mentality as the Differentiator

McPherson emphasizes that the duel against Indonesia is not merely a test of technique. He sees mentality as the most crucial factor when the pressure of the match intensifies.

“Right now, the team is in recovery mode, both mentally and physically. Indonesia is indeed full of talent, but the winning team isn't always the one with the strongest players; they are the team with the better attitude and mentality,” said McPherson.

Furthermore, according to him, victory isn't determined solely by big names or squad depth. Teams that can maintain focus and have the courage to make decisions in critical moments often win even when not favored.

Bolstered by Experienced Players

The Philippines' confidence is also boosted because this squad is strengthened by several players who have experienced the senior team atmosphere, such as Sandro Reyes, Alex Monis, and Santi Rublico. Their experience becomes a vital element in facing the pressure of big matches.

“We have a number of very strong players. Teams that win matches have a better attitude and mentality, so we are very excited about the opportunity to play,” stated McPherson, reiterating the importance of team mentality.

He also sees the match against Indonesia as a golden opportunity to test his team's progress.

“You want to play against these teams. It's fantastic. They've been able to bring back some players from their senior team, and for our players, this will be a chance to compete with some of the best players in Southeast Asia.”

The duel between the Philippines U22 and Indonesia U22 has now become one of the most anticipated matches in Group C. With both teams bringing high motivation, this match is predicted to be tight and tense, with mentality as the ultimate decider.
