Bogor – There is one notable conclusion drawn from the two 2026 President's Cup semi-final matches. Persib Bandung and Persebaya Surabaya did not advance to the final through luck. Both sides reached the title decider because they possessed a far more polished and defined playing identity compared to their respective opponents.
Persib defeated Persija Jakarta 2-1, while Persebaya overcame Arema FC 1-0. However, the final scorelines are not the biggest takeaway from these two semi-final ties. What stands out far more is how both teams secured victory using contrasting yet equally effective tactical approaches.
This analysis became the core topic of the ITSMe Podcast, featuring football analysts Sapto Haryo Rajasa and Erwin Fitriansyah. Hosted by Raisha and Gilang Respaty from ITSMe Studio in Sentul, Bogor, the podcast did not only review match results, but also broke down the strengths of all four semi-finalists, as well as the upcoming challenges facing Persib and Persebaya ahead of the final.

Persib vs Arema will serve as the opening big match for the 2026 President's Cup.
Persib emerged as the most complete team across the entire semi-final stage. Nicknamed Maung Bandung, the side controlled match tempo right from the opening minutes through structured build-up play, sharp attacking transitions, and varied offensive patterns that left Persija struggling to establish any rhythm.
The arrival of new signing Balsa Sekulic has added a new dimension to Persib's front line. The team no longer relies on a single attacking formula, instead creating threat through short passing combinations, inter-line movement, and exploiting open space along the flanks. Squad depth has now become one of the greatest strengths of Igor Tolic's side.
Even so, the victory over Persija also exposed a vulnerability that cannot be ignored.
Once the second half commenced, Persib's on-pitch intensity began to decline. Persija gained far more room to build attacks, forcing Persib to drop deep into defensive positions. Midfielder Luciano Guaycochea openly admitted that the squad was suffering fatigue after navigating a heavily congested fixture schedule.
This concern was reinforced by Igor Tolic, who confirmed that Persib's absolute top priority ahead of the final is physical player recovery. He noted that FIFA recommends a minimum 72 hour rest period between matches to protect player health.
Meanwhile, the 2026 President's Cup final will be played less than 48 hours after the conclusion of the semi-finals. This means Persib's biggest current challenge is not refining tactical game plans, but ensuring their squad can perform at full intensity once again.
On the other side of the tie, Persija did not perform as poorly as the final score suggests. The main issue for the side nicknamed Macan Kemayoran was not individual player quality, but consistent performance across 90 minutes.
They lost control of the match in the first half, and only managed to increase pressure after already falling behind. Their structural organisation, especially during defensive transitions, remains a clear area requiring improvement ahead of the 2026/2027 Super League season.
Where Persib advanced through aggression and creative play, Persebaya reached the final using a far more pragmatic tactical approach.
Bernardo Tavares' side did not attempt to dominate ball possession. Instead, the team known as Bajul Ijo prioritised maintaining tight defensive structure, closing down space between playing lines, and waiting for optimal moments to launch attacks. This approach was vindicated when Yuran Fernandes scored the goal that ultimately sealed their victory over Arema FC.
Persebaya's success was not defined solely by that single goal. The foundation of their performance rested on unbroken collective discipline.
They maintained consistent tight spacing between lines, executed coordinated defensive work effectively, and every player retained full focus for the entire match. Though they created fewer scoring chances than Persib, clinical efficiency was their deciding advantage.
In contrast, Arema FC lost momentum at critical stages. A goal they scored was ruled out for offside by VAR. After this setback, the side nicknamed Singo Edan continued to apply attacking pressure, but poor final third finishing combined with a red card shown to Diego Landis left them with almost no chance to recover the deficit.
Arema demonstrated strong competitive spirit throughout the match, but still requires clear improvements to attacking efficiency and defensive discipline.
These two semi-finals revealed one undeniable fact: Persib and Persebaya qualified for the final with clear, distinct established playing identities.
Persib brings creativity, rapid transitions and varied attacking threat. Persebaya relies on disciplined defensive organisation, unified team play, and the ability to capitalise on every small opportunity that arises.
For this reason, the 2026 President's Cup Final will not just be a clash between the two best remaining teams, it will be a showdown between two fundamentally different football philosophies.
Persib will attempt to dictate the match through their creativity and attacking intensity. Persebaya will almost certainly opt to maintain game balance while waiting for openings to punish their opponents.
There is however one single factor that has the potential to render every tactical plan irrelevant: player stamina.
With less than 48 hours of recovery time available, strategic preparation alone may not be enough to secure victory.
The championship title will most likely be decided by which team can best manage energy reserves, retain concentration, and maintain match intensity right up until the final whistle. This is precisely why, despite Persib entering the final following their win against Persija, this clash with Persebaya is expected to be a far greater challenge.
