Ahead of the Group C opening match of the 2025 SEA Games, the Indonesian U22 national team enters a crucial phase in their journey to the semifinals. The Garuda Muda squad, coached by Indra Sjafri, is scheduled to face the Philippines at the 7000th Anniversary Stadium, Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 18:00 WIB.

This match is viewed as the initial gateway to building momentum, but the coach emphasized that the first duel will not be easy.

The Philippines arrives with high confidence after a 2-0 win over Myanmar in their opening match. That victory has the team nicknamed The Azkals performing with high confidence, especially since they have experience facing Indonesia in the 2025 AFF U23 Cup.

From that encounter, the Philippines has already gained an understanding of Garuda Muda's playing style, a fact directly acknowledged by Indra Sjafri in his evaluation.

In that context, Indra emphasized the importance of a solid start. He stated that the opening match will greatly influence Indonesia's progress in the group stage.

“Tomorrow's match is very decisive for us to advance further,” he said.

Although not strengthened by Marselino Ferdinan, the Garuda Muda team composition is said to be without significant obstacles. All players are in a ready-to-fight condition and focused on advancing from the group stage.

In various training sessions, Indra has continually reminded players about the concept of gradual progression in building tournament performance. He directly emphasized to his squad that focus at every stage must be executed without compromise.

“I've stressed to the players to maintain focus because, as planned, I'm giving them responsibilities in stages,” Indra asserted.

The team's preparation is also reported to be progressing positively. Several trial matches, including against India and Mali, reportedly provided clear insights into areas needing improvement.

Indra stated that match simulations during these trial games significantly contributed to the team's daily improvement.

“Thankfully we've worked on improvements through simulation trials against India and most recently Mali,” he added.

Indra's confidence grew more apparent as he mentioned the team's progress meets expectations and they're ready to perform optimally.

“And thankfully the team's progress is excellent, I'm confident we can deliver a positive result tomorrow.”

Regarding the Philippines' strength, Indra believes opponents should be assessed collectively rather than individually. He considers their playing system quite solid, requiring Indonesia to maintain discipline and unity throughout the 90 minutes.

He explained football demands whole-team organization, not merely individual duels.

“I prefer to view opponents collectively, not individually, and anticipate systems rather than individual players,” he clarified.

Indra stressed the Philippines isn't a team to underestimate. He reminded players to stay humble and avoid assuming the opening match will be easy.

“I think the Philippines is actually a good team,” he remarked.

During final preparations, Indra ensured all players understand their individual duties and the importance of maintaining intensity from the first minute. He concluded with a firm message about focus and executing the planned strategy.

“Therefore no player should consider tomorrow's match easy - we must play according to plan throughout both 45-minute halves,” he concluded.
