The Indonesian national team began their journey in Group C of the SEA Games Thailand 2025 with a result far from expectations. Playing at the 700th Anniversary Stadium, Chiang Mai, on Monday evening, December 8, 2025, Garuda Muda had to admit the superiority of the Philippines with a narrow 0-1 scoreline.
The lone winning goal for The Azkals Muda was scored by Banatao Otu Abang via a header just before the first half ended. The aerial duel in the penalty box couldn't be anticipated by the Indonesian defender, while Cahya Supriadi, already moving, was unable to reach the ball heading towards the corner of the goal.
Being a goal down forced Indra Sjafri's squad to increase the pressure from the start of the second half. The playing pattern became more direct, the tempo increased, and the ball flowed faster into the final third of the pitch. However, these efforts were repeatedly thwarted by the Philippine players, who appeared disciplined in maintaining their defensive structure.

Second Half: Indonesian Dominance, but Blunt in Front of Goal
Indonesia's best chance came through Rahmat Arjuna. Receiving the ball inside the penalty box, he was actually in an ideal position to equalize. Unfortunately, his powerful shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Not long after, Rafael Struick also got a golden chance after managing to escape the marking of the Philippine defender. However, his left-footed shot lacked sufficient power and went wide of the target, reflecting just how poor Indonesia's finishing was in this match.
Late Pressure Not Enough to Save Garuda Muda
Entering the final 10 minutes, Ivar Jenner and his teammates continued to besiege the Philippine defense. Attacks from both flanks, aggressive pressing, and even long throw-ins created scrambles in front of Nicholas Guimaraes' goal. However, the Philippine goalkeeper stood firm and their defenders remained compact, making every Indonesian chance seem like it hit a brick wall.
Nine minutes of added time also weren't enough to change the situation. Although Indonesia's intensity increased, not a single chance could be converted into a goal before the final whistle blew.
Philippines Through, Indonesia Under Heavy Pressure
This victory gave the Philippines six points and secured a place in the semifinals after previously defeating Myanmar. Conversely, Indonesia finds themselves in a tight spot. The match against Myanmar on December 12th becomes a must-win for Garuda Muda to stay alive in the SEA Games 2025.
The team coached by Indra Sjafri must win if they want to keep their hopes of advancing to the top four alive, and the biggest issue clearly needing improvement is their effectiveness in front of goal.
