Marc-Andre ter Stegen has officially embarked on a new chapter of his career after joining Ajax Amsterdam in the 2026 summer transfer window. The veteran German goalkeeper joins on loan from Barcelona for the full duration of the 2026/2027 campaign.
Ajax announced the completed transfer through the club's official website on Wednesday. Ter Stegen's arrival marks a major squad strengthening move for the Dutch giants, as they prepare to compete in both domestic league action and European continental competition.
Ajax believes the 34-year-old goalkeeper's extensive top-level experience will bring significant impact to Michel Sanchez's squad. Ter Stegen is not an unfamiliar figure to Ajax's management, most notably Technical Director Jordi Cruijff who has known the player for many years.

"We have been working to bring him here for quite some time, so we are extremely happy that he has signed his contract and can now begin his time with us immediately," Cruijff stated.
This transfer also reunites Ter Stegen with Michel Sanchez. During the second half of the 2025/2026 season, Barcelona had loaned Ter Stegen out to Girona FC. At that time, Sanchez was the head coach of Girona before making his move to take charge of Ajax.
Ter Stegen started his professional career at Borussia Mönchengladbach, his hometown club in Germany. After recording 127 appearances across three and a half seasons, he was recruited by Barcelona in 2014, where he went on to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.
Over more than a decade representing the Catalan club, Ter Stegen made 423 total appearances across all competitions. He played a key role in Barcelona lifting major honours, including the UEFA Champions League trophy and seven La Liga titles.
At international level, Ter Stegen has earned 44 caps for the Germany Men's National Team. His vast experience competing at the highest tier of football is expected to bring stability and a winning mentality to the Ajax dressing room.
