Pep Guardiola isn't the type of manager to be easily surprised. Amidst the tight 2025/2026 Premier League title race, the Spanish tactician admitted he had foreseen one possibility from the start: Arsenal would inevitably drop points at some crucial moments. And when that opportunity arose, Manchester City had to be ready to go full throttle.

That's precisely what unfolded this weekend. Roughly an hour after Arsenal fell 1-2 to Aston Villa, Etihad Stadium erupted. City hosted Sunderland and without ceremony secured a convincing 3-0 victory, a statement that they are deadly serious in this season's title pursuit.

The win leaves City just two points behind league leaders Arsenal (33 points). With the competition still long, City's chances of overtaking their rivals are wide open.

Guardiola himself didn't hide that this prediction had long been in his mind.

"We had a feeling Arsenal would drop some points. So, if we want to catch them, we have to win game after game. And success is determined by how we perform on the pitch, not just luck," said Pep, quoted from Manchester City's official website.

In Guardiola's eyes, the win against Sunderland wasn't just three points. It was proof that his team is still operating at a very high level of play during the most important phase of the season.

"Today might have been one of our best performances of the season over the full 95 minutes," he emphasized.

City Win Big, Pep Totally Satisfied

From the first minute, City played like a finely tuned machine. Fast tempo, ball dominance, organized pressing, and efficient finishing — the complete package of Guardiola's trademark football was perfectly displayed.

Ruben Dias' goal in the 31st minute opened the floodgates. Just four minutes later, Josko Gvardiol added to the lead with a finish that sent Etihad into raptures. In the second half, Phil Foden sealed the victory with a goal in the 65th minute, wrapping up a 3-0 win.

For City, such a complete performance is a strong signal that they are starting to find their best rhythm heading into the busy mid-season period.

Consistency, Pep's Key to the Title Chase

Pep didn't just offer praise. He has been at this point many times with City, and he knows full well that the Premier League title is never won by just one big victory in a single week. What determines it is routine, continuity, and a steely mentality.

"Based on my experience, the most important thing to win the Premier League is consistency. Consistency comes from the way you play and how much you grow, whether you are 1-2 down or 4-1 up," stressed Pep, the manager who has delivered six Premier League titles to City.

With Arsenal beginning to wobble and City looking increasingly convincing, the remainder of the season has the potential to be one of the most dramatic title races in recent years. And if Pep is right, City is warming up the engine for a long sprint to the top.
