Behind the lush forests of Trenggalek, Goa Lowo stands as one of the natural icons preserving geological traces thousands of years old. Yet amidst the beauty of towering stalactites and stalagmites, this destination is experiencing a decline in tourist interest.
The Trenggalek Regency Tourism and Culture Office is preparing to address this challenge with a new approach by introducing light attractions within the natural tourist site. This concept attempts to embrace technology without sacrificing natural authenticity.
“Goa Lowo has the fewest visits compared to other tourist spots. Yet this is one of Trenggalek's icons,” said Acting Head of Trenggalek Disparbud, Edi Santoso.

Disparbud data shows a worrying trend: 13,000 tourists in 2022, dropping to 10,539 in 2023, and falling further to 9,168 in 2024.
In Indonesia's increasingly competitive tourism landscape, a new approach is needed. Goa Lowo is not just a natural space but also a story space waiting to be reinterpreted. This is where the idea of light attractions becomes key.
Light That Revives Nature's Narrative
Across the world, light has become a medium to enliven underground spaces, focusing attention on rock formations, guiding visitors through geological corridors, and creating a magical atmosphere without violating conservation boundaries. Trenggalek aims to build a similar experience.
The plan is for the light attractions at Goa Lowo to be more than mere decoration; they will be arranged using technology and integrated with a geopark concept.
This approach aligns with the mission of many international geological parks that use visual storytelling to introduce geological processes more captivatingly.
However, the transformation cannot be rushed. The initial development stage will begin in the outer cave area.
“We are starting from the outdoor area. Developing the inner area requires geological research first,” he explained.
Visitor safety and cave structural stability are primary considerations before introducing light installations into that sensitive natural space.
Revitalization from Morning to Night
The revitalization project involves PT Assalam, a partner in the Jatim Park network, which has experience creating educational and thematic tourist destinations.
The outer cave area will be equipped with a cafeteria, playgrounds, and visiting paths allowing tourists to enjoy the natural ambiance more comfortably.
"In the future, light attractions are projected to become the main magnet making Goa Lowo active from morning to night,” Edi continued.
If tourist responses are positive, the door for further cooperation with the central Jatim Park management will open.
This means larger investments and broader innovations could emerge in the area—potentially bringing immersive light shows, geological audio-visual experiences, or themed science night tours.
Rebuilding Trenggalek's Tourism Identity
Besides Goa Lowo, Disparbud is also preparing developments for Pasir Putih Simbaronce, Prigi 360, and Hotel Prigi.
Yet all these steps seem to hinge on one big question: can Goa Lowo become the main tourist magnet again?
Goa Lowo is not just about petrified stalactites or long corridors. It is a space that blends awe, mystery, and natural tranquility.
With the new light-based approach, Trenggalek strives to create an experience that is not merely visual, but also emotional.(Antara)
