Interest among Chinese tourists to visit Indonesia has shown a positive trend throughout 2026. Latest data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) records that 734,691 Chinese tourists arrived in the country during the first semester of 2026. This figure represents an 18.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

This surge further solidifies China's position as an increasingly important international tourism market for Indonesia. The country ranks as the fourth largest source of foreign visitors for Indonesia, trailing only Malaysia, Australia and Singapore. It accounted for 9.8 percent of total international tourist arrivals during the first six months of this year.

Overall, Indonesia received 7.45 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first half of 2026. This number rose by 5.7 percent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

Beyond rising arrival numbers, Chinese tourists are also staying longer while in Indonesia. Their average length of stay reached 23.96 nights, an increase from the 23.48 nights recorded in the same period last year.

Longer visit durations provide added value, as they carry the potential to deliver greater economic impact for tourism destinations as well as local business operators.

Responding to this positive trend, the government through the Ministry of Tourism has set a target of 1.56 to 1.72 million Chinese tourist arrivals for the full 2026 year.

Various promotional strategies continue to be rolled out, one of which is the familiarization trip (famtrip) program.

This program invites representatives from premium travel agencies and MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition) companies from China to explore tourist destinations around Jakarta.

The capital city was selected as it is one of the main entry points for Chinese tourists before they continue their travels to other regions across Indonesia.

Tourism ties between the two countries are also growing in the reverse direction. BPS recorded that outbound travel by Indonesian tourists to China rose by 33 percent during the first semester of 2026 compared to the previous year.

Out of a total 4.46 million outbound trips made by Indonesian tourists in the first half of 2026, 8.69 percent selected China as their travel destination.
