North Gorontalo marine tourism is increasingly gaining global attention, with Lampu Island standing out as the leading prime attraction.

The beauty of the white sand archipelago along the northern coast of North Gorontalo Regency is steadily gaining recognition among international tourists. While it has not yet received mass visitor volumes, this region has already begun establishing its own niche in the global tourism market, driven by organic promotion from travellers sharing their experiences and the area's natural beauty on social media.

This pattern was recently observed when two French tourists travelled to North Gorontalo for a family holiday, visiting specifically to witness the panoramic views of these exotic islands firsthand. They found out about the destination from social media posts shared by fellow French citizens who had previously vacationed in the area.

Gorontalo tourism advocate Yasin Ali confirmed that foreign traveller interest towards North Gorontalo's northern coastal zone continues to show positive growth trends.

"While overall tourist arrivals to this area are not massive, the consistent frequency of visits remains steady and strong, including arrivals from international visitors," Yasin Ali stated on Friday.

Captivated by the White Sand Islands

Yasin explained that both French tourists developed interest in the destination after viewing travel documentation shared by other visitors who travelled to the area in February 2026.

"These French travellers confirmed they intentionally came to this regency specifically for the beautiful white sand islands. They told me they saw posts from another French national who also vacationed here back in February 2026," Yasin explained.

According to him, this development confirms that North Gorontalo's coastal region is beginning to build an established audience within the international tourism sector.

During their trip, Yasin accompanied the pair to explore three islands: Mohinggito Island, Lampu Island, and Bugisa Island.

A planned visit to Huha Island had to be cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, marked by strong winds and high ocean waves.

"Today I accompanied them to visit Mohinggito, Lampu and Bugisa islands. We originally intended to travel to Huha Island as well, but extreme weather with strong winds and high waves made crossing to that island unsafe and impossible," he stated.

Infrastructure as Core Priority for Tourism Development

Yasin assessed that North Gorontalo's marine tourism potential requires critical supporting investment: improved transport infrastructure, adequate accommodation availability, and strengthened tourist attractions, all designed to give visitors reason to extend their stay.

Longer visitor stays directly translate to greater economic growth opportunities for local communities, through micro, small and medium enterprises, service sectors, as well as increased local government revenue.

"This momentum can be developed strategically to boost local government revenue generated from the tourism sector," Yasin noted.

He called on the regional administration to immediately finalise supporting regulations, including standardised transparent pricing controls at all tourist destinations, to create fair mutual benefits for visitors, local business operators, and the regional government.

"It is expected that the regional government will complete these supporting regulations soon, so that pricing structures across all tourist sites can be properly managed, creating benefits for local communities, business actors, while also becoming a sustainable revenue source for the region," he added.

Lampu Island Leaves Lasting Impression

Of all locations visited, the natural beauty of Lampu Island left the deepest impression on the French tourists. They expressed genuine amazement at the crystal clear ocean waters, pristine stretches of clean white sand, and the untouched, peaceful atmosphere of the island.

This enthusiastic response demonstrates the enormous untapped potential North Gorontalo holds to develop into a leading premium marine tourism destination.

With wider promotional reach, proper infrastructure investment, and sustainable management practices, North Gorontalo's northern coastal region is well positioned to attract significantly more domestic and international visitors in the coming years. (Antara)
