Janice Tjen Eliminated in Dramatic Fashion in the Round of 16 of the 2026 DC Open

Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen's run at the 2026 WTA 500 Mubadala DC Open ended in the Round of 16. Facing Russia's 5th seed Anna Kalinskaya, Janice put up a fierce fight before finally falling after a 2 hour 19 minute three-set battle in Washington, D.C., United States.

Janice failed to advance to the quarterfinals, conceding the match to Kalinskaya with a final score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-7. Despite being eliminated, Janice demonstrated strong competitive mentality by pushing the match all the way to a deciding set tie-break.

Janice Delivers Convincing First Set Performance

Janice opened the match with a surprising display of form. Up against one of the tournament's top seeds, she took full control of play and raced out to a dominant 5-0 lead.

Kalinskaya managed to narrow the gap to 1-5, but Janice closed out the first set with a clear 6-1 victory.

This dominant showing built on Janice's earlier success, after she had defeated Slovakian player Rebecca Sramkova in the Round of 32.

Kalinskaya Recovers To Force Deciding Set

Entering the second set, Kalinskaya began to find her best playing rhythm. While Janice kept pace to hold the score level at 2-2, the Russian player gradually took control of the match.

Playing with increased aggression and minimal unforced errors, Kalinskaya secured the second set 6-3 to level the match at 1-1.

This momentum carried into the third set, which played out as a far tighter contest.

Tie-Break Settles The Match

Kalinskaya held an early lead at the start of the deciding set. However, Janice once again showed her fighting spirit to turn the tide and edge ahead 5-4.

Competition grew even more intense as both players traded points back and forth, until the third set had to be settled by tie-break.

In the most crucial moments, Kalinskaya kept her composure. The 5th seed ultimately won the tie-break 9-7, confirming her 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 victory over Janice.
