World's Best Culinary Destinations 2026 by TTW: Indonesia Represents Southeast Asia in the Top 10

Indonesia has been named among the world's top 10 best culinary tourism destinations for 2026 by digital publication Travel and Tour World (TTW). On the Top 50 Food Destinations Around the World for 2026 list, Indonesia secured the 10th position.

Indonesia's ranking even placed it one spot above France, a nation long globally associated with Michelin-starred restaurants and prestigious gastronomic heritage.

This achievement also makes Indonesia the only Southeast Asian country to enter the top 10 tier of the world's best culinary destinations.

Indonesian Archipelago Culinary Wealth Receives Global Recognition

As stated by TTW, Indonesia's greatest strength lies in the diversity of cuisine spread across its thousands of islands. Indonesian food is further enriched by traditional spice usage and cooking traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Anup Kumar Keshan, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of TTW, explained that rankings were not judged solely on food taste, but also on the cultural values embedded within each cuisine.

"This 2026 list of the 50 best culinary destinations recognises nations that position food as an integral part of their cultural heritage. These countries preserve their culinary traditions while also evolving through innovation, responsible raw material sourcing, and implementation of sustainable tourism principles."

TTW assessed that Indonesian gastronomy stands as a living, thriving representation of cultural heritage that remains actively practiced today.

From Jakarta to Padang: Every Region Carries Its Own Unique Flavour Identity

One core reason Indonesia qualified for this list is the vast range of distinct culinary experiences available across the entire archipelago, from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost Merauke.

TTW specifically highlighted the food culture across Indonesia's major urban centres.

"The bustling street food atmosphere in Jakarta, world-famous Balinese cuisine, royal palace culinary heritage in Yogyakarta, and the growing modern cafe scene in Bandung all create unique appeal for international visitors."

Beyond these locations, TTW also noted the distinctive flavour traditions from Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, Lombok, as well as the iconic Minangkabau rendang.

Top 10 Must-Visit Culinary Destinations In Indonesia

In its published report, TTW recommended 10 culinary locations that travellers should prioritise when visiting Indonesia.

Jakarta for nasi goreng fried rice, satay, gado-gado vegetable salad, soto soup, and its legendary street food. Bali for nasi campur mixed rice, fresh seafood dishes, and traditional babi guling roast suckling pig. Yogyakarta for gudeg young jackfruit stew, sate klatak goat satay, and bakpia sweet pastries.

Bandung for batagor fried dumplings, siomai, mi kocok beef noodle soup, and its famous modern cafes. Surabaya for rawon black beef stew and rujak cingur herb salad. Medan for regional Medan-style soto and traditional curry varieties. Makassar for coto Makassar spiced beef soup, sop konro rib soup, and premium coastal seafood.

Lombok for spicy Ayam Taliwang grilled chicken and plecing kangkung water spinach salad. Semarang for lumpia spring rolls and tahu gimbal fried tofu dishes. Padang for world-famous rendang and traditional nasi Padang rice platters.

Mexico Claims First Place On The Global Ranking

For the 2026 edition, Mexico took the top position as the world's best culinary tourism destination according to TTW, recognised for its rich local agricultural resources and carefully preserved traditional cooking techniques.

This global ranking was compiled across multiple assessment criteria: culinary heritage, regional food diversity, destination appeal, and the real on-ground travel experience reported by visitors.
