The year 2026 began positively for Indonesia's tourism sector. According to the latest data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Foreign Tourist visits in January 2026 reached 1.01 million arrivals.
Year-on-year, this figure grew by 1.11 percent compared to January 2025. Though the increase isn't substantial, it confirms Indonesia remains a globally relevant destination.
BPS Distribution and Services Statistics Deputy Ateng Hartono explained the early-year visitation trends.

"Foreign tourist arrivals through main gateways decreased 17.06 percent monthly, but increased 1.1 percent year-on-year," stated Hartono in Jakarta on Monday, March 2, 2026.
This indicates a monthly decline, yet compared to the same period last year, foreign tourist numbers still show growth.
Entry Points
These tourist arrivals were recorded through various main entry points, including international airports, seaports, and cross-border posts.
For travelers, this confirms air and sea connectivity remain crucial for tourist mobility to Indonesia. Cities with international airports likely remain primary gateways to favorite destinations for nature, cultural, and Culinary Tourism.
Domestic Travelers Still Dominant Despite Minor Dip
Meanwhile, domestic Traveler trips in January 2026 reached 102.04 million, down 0.93 percent from January 2025.
Despite this slight correction, domestic trips exceeding 100 million indicate Indonesians maintain high mobility. This may reflect an adjustment period before upcoming long holidays.
Transportation Modes: Rail Travel Accelerates
Notable data comes from transportation: train passengers reached 48.10 million, rising 10.94 percent year-on-year.
This surge suggests growing preference for trains, especially for intercity travel in Java and Sumatra. Beyond comfort and punctuality, trains are often considered efficient for medium distances.
International air passengers also grew 2.04 percent to 1.77 million, aligning with foreign tourist increases.
However, domestic flights decreased 3.33 percent to 4.92 million passengers. Domestic sea transport dipped slightly by 0.55 percent to 2.61 million. Similarly, river, lake, and ferry transport recorded 4.29 million passengers, down 3.67 percent.
Logistics Sector Also Corrects
Beyond human mobility, goods distribution also slowed. Domestic sea freight transported 37.49 million tons of goods, down 1.05 percent year-on-year.
Rail freight recorded 5.33 million tons, falling 7.90 percent annually. Domestic air cargo transported only 53 thousand tons, down 13.01 percent from the same period last year.
