Dominant Real Madrid, Vinicius Makes the Difference
Madrid attacked aggressively from the start. The first threat came from Kylian Mbappé's shot saved by Benfica Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Benfica responded weakly with a tame header from Tomás Araújo easily collected by Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.
Arda Güler's long-range strike forced a brilliant save from Trubin, leaving the first half goalless.
Vinicius finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. His goal proved decisive, though Trubin later denied two more chances from the Brazilian.
Vinicius Reports Racism Allegations
Madrid's victory was marred by controversy as Vinicius reported alleged racist actions by Benfica players to the referee.
The incident began when Vinicius celebrated his goal with dancing at the corner flag, earning him a yellow card for excessive celebration.
This provoked Benfica players, leading to a verbal clash between Vinicius and Gianluca Prestianni. Vinicius accused Prestianni of making racist remarks while covering his mouth with his shirt during their argument.
Vinicius initially refused to continue playing. The referee halted the match and activated anti-racism protocols.
The confrontation spread to both benches, resulting in a red card for Benfica's coaching staff. Prestianni denied the racism allegations.
Play was suspended for approximately 10 minutes before resuming, with Vinicius returning to complete the match.
