Jonatan Christie will face Loh Kean Yew in the Round of 16 of the 2026 China Open.

Indonesian men's singles badminton athlete Jonatan Christie, commonly called Jojo, has advanced to the second round of the 2026 BWF World Tour Super 1000 China Open. For the next stage, Jojo will face Singaporean representative Loh Kean Yew at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, Changzhou this coming Thursday.

This upcoming fixture is projected to be one of the most anticipated clashes in the round of 16. Jojo acknowledges the high calibre of the Singaporean former world champion, who is well known for relying on an aggressive playing style.

"I have to be careful and stay extra vigilant. Under these tournament conditions, Loh will definitely settle into his rhythm quickly. I need to anticipate every possibility properly," stated Jojo in an official quote from PBSI.

Jonatan progressed to the second round after surviving a tightly contested opening match against Japanese player Yudai Okimoto, eventually claiming victory across three games with the final score 21-17, 6-21, 21-13.

Despite securing the win, Jonatan admitted he initially struggled to adapt to the Changzhou court conditions, which are heavily affected by air drift patterns and the characteristics of the tournament official shuttlecocks.

"Thank God I was able to pull through that uncomfortable, difficult situation. This China Open venue really is quite tricky with the wind conditions and the shuttlecocks. I had to think very carefully and execute game strategy properly out there today," he said.

Jojo explained that his ability to read in-match flow allowed him to turn the tie around after suffering a lopsided defeat in the second game.

Aside from the on-court environmental factors, Jojo also praised Yudai Okimoto's performance, noting the Japanese athlete showed remarkable discipline and committed almost no unforced errors throughout the full duration of the match.

"Yudai is tenacious, patient, and very hard to put away. That is the classic profile of Japanese badminton players," he added.

Now the fourth tournament seed has directed his full focus onto Loh Kean Yew. Against Loh's signature all-out attacking playstyle, Jojo will need to maintain flawless consistency across both defensive and offensive phases of play.

This fixture against Loh Kean Yew will act as a major benchmark for Jonatan to prove his form at this Super 1000 tier event, which offers a total prize pool of 2 million US dollars.
