Jordi Amat is optimistic that the Indonesian National Team will defeat Cambodia in their opening match of the 2026 AFF Cup.

Indonesian national team player Jordi Amat has confirmed that the Garuda squad's target is to secure a victory when they face Cambodia in the opening Group A match at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor, on Monday 27 July 2026.

He assessed that winning the first match will act as a foundation to build team confidence, while also preserving Indonesia's chances to advance far in Southeast Asia's most prestigious football tournament.

"We can claim this first opening win for Indonesia, and the team will continue to develop further from there. To be honest, I am really excited for this," Jordi Amat stated on the sidelines of the Indonesian national team training camp at the Bali United Training Center, Gianyar Regency, Bali, on Thursday.

Jordi and his teammates have already undergone almost three weeks of concentrated training camp in Bali. The training programme focuses on improving physical fitness, refining team tactics, and running full match simulations.

One item on the preparation schedule was a friendly fixture against Bali United at Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium on Tuesday 21 July. In that match, the Indonesian national team secured a 3-0 victory.

This positive result became valuable preparation for John Herdman's squad ahead of entering the official competition at the 2026 AFF Cup.

Following the friendly match, the coaching team shifted focus to physical recovery protocols, to ensure all players are in peak condition ahead of the fixture against Cambodia.

"Today for example, we are focusing fully on recovery, because that match against Bali United was very demanding, it was held at extremely high intensity. The coach was quite impressed with our performance, and so were the players," he said.

Alongside preparations for their first opponent, Jordi also responded to the development of multiple Southeast Asian nations strengthening their squads with naturalised players. According to him, the Indonesian national team will analyse the strengths of their competitors gradually.

Even so, he confirmed that changes to the strength of rival teams will not alter Garuda's ambition to chase the championship title that has never been won by the nation to date.

"We have a great squad, very talented players, and we hold a very clear philosophy for our football. That is the most important thing for us," he stated.

Indonesia is drawn in Group A alongside Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Timor Leste. After facing Cambodia, Garuda will still have three more group matches to contest in order to qualify for the semi-finals.

Since the AFF Cup was first held in 1996, Indonesia has never lifted the championship trophy despite reaching the final on six occasions. For this reason, the 2026 edition presents a new opportunity for the Indonesian national team to end this long wait.
