Traveling Trends among young people today are no longer just about hunting for aesthetic photos. Vacations are gradually shifting into a means of healing, seeking balance for body and mind. Amidst this trend, Bali reaffirms its position as Indonesia's premier Wellness Tourism destination.
Vinsensius Jemadu, Deputy for Activity Organizer Development at the Ministry of Tourism, stated that Bali remains the region most ready to develop Wellness Tourism, a travel concept focused on enhancing physical, mental, and emotional health.
"Two years ago, the Ministry of Tourism tried to identify which destinations were most prepared. Of course, Bali is already very ready with its human resource infrastructure," he said on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Bali's readiness is not new. For decades, the island has been known as a home for yoga retreats, traditional spas, Meditation, and local wisdom-based healing practices. In fact, the Indonesian government made the development of Wellness Tourism a national priority 27 years ago by designating Sanur, Bali, as a pilot project health area.
This step is considered proof of the government's seriousness in building tourism that doesn't solely rely on entertainment, but also on the quality of life for tourists.
"Going forward, development will also be carried out in other destinations. This program aims to reduce the number of Indonesians Traveling abroad, which has often been referred to as foreign exchange leakage," he said.
Not just Bali, the government has also designated several other cities as leading wellness tourism destinations. Manado, Jakarta, Solo, Yogyakarta, Malang, to Medan are projected to become alternative healing trip destinations offering diverse experiences, from tropical nature and Cultural Heritage, to modern healthcare services.
"Manado is one of the destinations that I think is currently ready. One aspect is through its wellness tourism development," he stated.
Interestingly, Indonesia's wellness concept isn't just about spas and meditation. Azril Azhari, Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Scholars Association, believes Indonesia's main strength actually lies in its history and wealth of spices.
"This spice route is what needs to be further developed by the ministry, including its history and so on. So that people from abroad seek these ingredients from Indonesia," he said.
Spices, which have been a global attraction since the 16th century, can now be repackaged as a modern wellness experience. Ranging from jamu (traditional herbal drinks), aromatherapy, spice therapies, to healthy culinary offerings based on local ingredients.
However, Azril warned against wellness tourism development falling into excessive commercialization. He suggested that the utilization of spices should not only focus on bodily health but also be integrated into culinary experiences as part of Cultural Experiences.
For young travelers, Indonesian wellness tourism offers a complete package: natural healing, historical stories, authentic flavors, and personal experiences hard to find elsewhere. Bali may still be at the top, but the future of Indonesia's wellness tourism is wide open across many regions.
