Labuhan Sarangan, the village cleansing tradition of Sarangan Village residents, Plaosan Subdistrict, Magetan Regency, has been officially recognized by Indonesia's Ministry of Culture as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). This tradition reflects the maintained relationship between humans and nature.

This designation is not merely a symbolic award, but an acknowledgment of cultural practices inherited across generations and still thriving within the community.

Magetan Regent Nanik Endang Rusminiarti stated that Labuhan Sarangan is a tradition rich in cultural and spiritual meaning.

"Labuhan Sarangan is not just a ritual, but an exalted Cultural Heritage laden with meaning. This tradition is an expression of gratitude for sustenance, safety, and blessings, as well as a form of respect for nature, which is the mainstay of the community's livelihood," said Nanik during the 2026 Labuhan Sarangan event at Sarangan Lake, Magetan, Friday, January 16, 2026.

According to her, this tradition also serves as a collective reminder for the community to always maintain the balance of nature, particularly Sarangan Lake, which has long been a Tourism icon and a source of livelihood for surrounding residents.

She added that the values of spirituality, mutual cooperation, togetherness, and environmental care must continue to be passed on to the Younger Generation. This is to ensure Labuhan Sarangan does not remain merely a cultural spectacle, but becomes a way of life.

This ICH recognition was met with pride by the Sarangan community. Head of the Magetan Regency Tourism and Culture Office, Joko Trihono, called this designation a major achievement for residents who have consistently preserved ancestral traditions.

"Labuhan Sarangan is an ancestral tradition rich in customary values. It has now been officially registered as Intangible Cultural Heritage," he said.

Furthermore, Joko expressed hope that Labuhan Sarangan could reach a wider stage by being included in the national event calendar, as a Cultural Attraction representing Magetan's identity.

This tradition is rooted in the community's expression of gratitude for the natural bounty around them: the clear lake, cool mountain landscape, and fertile land.

The core of Labuhan Sarangan, Joko explained, is consistently upholding customary values and environmental preservation every year.

Amidst growing tourism interest, this tradition serves as a reminder that tourism and Conservation must go hand in hand.

Beyond its cultural function, Labuhan Sarangan also has a tangible impact on the tourism sector. Sarangan Lake continues to be a magnet for tourists.

Throughout 2025, visitor numbers reached 1,094,668, generating regional revenue (PAD) of Rp20.202 billion.

This figure increased compared to 2024, which recorded 1,080,666 Tourist Visits with PAD of Rp20.102 billion. (ANTARA)
