Indonesian women's Tennis Player Janice Tjen will begin the 2026 season as the fifth seed at the WTA 250 ASB Classic tournament held in Auckland, New Zealand. This event marks the opening of the new WTA season calendar and serves as a crucial platform for Janice to test her consistency at the elite level.

According to the official WTA website on Tuesday, the 2026 ASB Classic edition will feature an intriguing mix of rising young stars and established names in world tennis. The absence of defending Champion Clara Tauson and Coco Gauff – who opted to compete in Brisbane and United Cup respectively – leaves the Auckland competition wide open for a new champion to emerge.

This situation presents a golden opportunity for Janice, who concluded the 2025 season with impressive performances. She secured the WTA 125 title in Jinan and the WTA 250 trophy in Chennai, achievements that earned her seeded status at this 2026 season opener.

However, Janice's path won't be easy. Several young talents are poised to make their mark, including local player Lulu Sun. The 24-year-old directly qualified for the main draw with a world ranking of 90th and will enjoy full support from Auckland spectators.

Lulu Sun is also riding positive momentum after winning the WTA 125 Jingshan in China last September and reaching the Guangzhou tournament final last October. Her quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon 2024 further solidifies her status as a player to watch.

Alongside Janice, Southeast Asia will also be represented by Alexandra Eala. The Filipina player makes her ASB Classic debut after making history as the first Philippine tennis player to break into the world's top 50 in 2025. The Women's Singles champion at the 2025 SEA Games Thailand is still pursuing her maiden WTA Tour title.

Another spotlight falls on the return of global Tennis Legend Venus Williams. The seven-time Grand Slam champion received a wild card to compete in Auckland. This tournament marks her first appearance since the US Open, continuing her comeback after returning to competition last July following a 16-month absence. Her compatriot Sloane Stephens, the 2016 Grand Slam champion, also received a wild card invitation.

In the seeding list, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina leads as the top seed. American Emma Navarro follows as second seed, with Iva Jovic in third position. Alexandra Eala and Janice Tjen occupy the fourth and fifth seeds respectively.

Meanwhile, Poland's Magda Linette holds the sixth seed, China's Wang Xinyu is seeded seventh, and American Peyton Stearns rounds out the seeded players in eighth position.

The 2026 ASB Classic will take place in the first week of January, with the final scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2026. For Janice, this tournament isn't just a season opener but also a strategic opportunity to cement her status as one of Asia's most formidable players on the WTA circuit.
