Real Madrid finally rediscovered their winning path after narrowly defeating Deportivo Alaves 2-1 in Matchday 16 of La Liga. Playing at Mendizorroza Stadium, Vitoria-Gasteiz on Sunday, December 14, 2025, local time, Los Blancos demonstrated the character of a major team capable of rebounding after a difficult period.

This victory served as a crucial response for Madrid following two negative results they previously experienced across competitions. Defeats to Celta Vigo and Manchester City had raised questions about the consistency of Carlo Ancelotti's squad, particularly regarding defensive stability and attacking effectiveness.

Against Alaves, Madrid adopted an attacking approach from the opening minutes. Ball possession dominance combined with aggressive movement from the frontline spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe. This pressure yielded results in the 24th minute when Mbappe broke the deadlock to give Madrid a 1-0 lead.

The goal showcased Mbappe's quality as a difference-maker in crucial matches. The French attacker not only actively sought space but also remained the focal point of Madrid's attacks throughout the game.

Los Blancos appeared to double their lead through Jude Bellingham. However, the referee disallowed the goal after review revealed a handball in the buildup. This decision forced Madrid to remain cautious as their one-goal advantage wasn't sufficient to secure the result.

Alaves refused to sit back. Approaching halftime, the hosts nearly equalized through Pablo Ibanez's strike. But Thibaut Courtois' quick reflexes under the crossbar ensured Madrid maintained their lead until the break.

Game intensity escalated in the second half. Alaves grew bolder, pressing from the wings and utilizing crosses. Their efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Carlos Vicente fired a powerful shot from a measured cross that Courtois failed to stop, leveling the score at 1-1.

The equalizer momentarily shifted momentum to Alaves. Yet Madrid's experience and squad depth prevailed. Just eight minutes later, a swift attacking combination proved decisive. Vinicius Junior delivered a precise pass calmly finished by Rodrygo, restoring Madrid's 2-1 lead in the 76th minute.

Rodrygo's goal cemented the vital role of Madrid's attacking trio in securing victory. Vinicius' speed, Mbappe's movement, and Rodrygo's effectiveness became primary weapons constantly troubling Alaves' defense until the final whistle.

During the remaining time, Madrid sought to extend their advantage to secure the result, while Alaves chased an equalizer through counterattacks. Despite the high tempo, no further goals materialized before full-time.

This result keeps Real Madrid firmly in second place in the La Liga standings with 39 points from 17 matches. They remain just four points behind leaders Barcelona, keeping their title hopes alive.

Conversely, the defeat leaves Alaves stalled in 12th position with 18 points from 16 games. While relatively safe, their mere three-point cushion above the relegation zone serves as a warning to immediately return to positive results.

Victory over Alaves represents more than three points for Real Madrid—it marks a crucial revival moment. With a packed schedule and top-tier competition pressure, this result could prove pivotal for Los Blancos to regain consistency for the remainder of the season.
