In the 14th week of Serie A 2025/26, at Mapei Stadium, Saturday, December 6, 2025, WIB evening, Sassuolo showed their steely mentality. After falling behind, the team nicknamed Neroverdi counterattacked sharply and closed the match with a 3-1 victory over Fiorentina.

Fiorentina initially took the lead via a penalty; Sassuolo goalkeeper Arijanet Muric misjudged a punch attempt and instead hit Fabiano Parisi in the face. Rolando Mandragora stepped up as the executor, successfully deceiving Muric and putting Fiorentina ahead 1-0.

However, Sassuolo didn't take long to respond. Just minutes after Mandragora's goal, young midfielder Cristian Volpato unleashed a powerful shot from the right side that the Fiorentina goalkeeper couldn't reach, making it 1-1.

Revitalized with confidence, the hosts kept pressing. Right at the end of the first half, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic capitalized on a cross from Armand Laurienté with a perfect header, putting Sassuolo ahead 2-1 just before halftime.

Entering the second half, Sassuolo didn't relent. In the 65th minute, following a nimble maneuver by Volpato, Ismaël Koné pierced the penalty box and fired an unstoppable shot past the Fiorentina keeper, extending the lead to 3-1 – a goal that ultimately secured the three points for the home side.

This result moved Sassuolo up to eighth place in the provisional standings with 20 points. Meanwhile, Fiorentina sank deeper at the bottom of the table, still stuck on 6 points from 14 matches. —

A Solid Role in the Heart of Defence

Sassuolo's performance was further enhanced by the key display of their main defender, Jay Idzes. The Indonesian defender played the full 90 minutes and was the foundation of Neroverdi's backline.

According to Fotmob data, Idzes recorded 7 crucial clearances and won 5 aerial duels plus ground challenges against Fiorentina players.

This season marks Idzes' 13th appearance for Sassuolo in Serie A, proof of his increasingly mature adaptation despite competing at the elite level.

With such defensive contributions, Idzes helped stabilize Sassuolo's backline in a fiercely contested match, a significant moment for Indonesian fans following the player's progress in Europe.

This victory wasn't just about the 3-1 scoreline for Sassuolo; it was about mentality and momentum. After falling behind early, they managed to calm the game down, build from the back, and capitalize efficiently on their chances.

Match statistics show that although Fiorentina initially dominated possession, the attacking effectiveness and finishing efficiency belonged to Sassuolo.

This demonstrates that with discipline, quick transitions, and defensive focus – including solid performances at the back – a "mid-table" quality team can dramatically defeat a weaker side.

For young supporters fond of tactics, this serves as proof that possession isn't always everything. Patience, timely transitions, and team cohesion can be more decisive in a match.
