There was something different in the Solo night air on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Under the sparkling lights of Balekambang Park, Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Widiyanti Putri Wardhana opened the Wonderful Indonesia Wellness (WIW) 2025 festival, a celebration not just about traveling, but about finding inner balance amidst the hustle and bustle of the modern world.
In her speech, Minister Widiyanti emphasized the shift in current global tourism trends.
"Because, the world is increasingly stressed, right? So, they are seeking destinations that offer wellness products and other products, so they return home healthy and no longer stressed," she said to the invited guests and tourism industry players.

This phenomenon is not just a fleeting trend. After the pandemic, the concept of wellness tourism has grown rapidly worldwide. Tourists now don't just chase Instagrammable photo spots, but also experiences that heal physically and mentally. And Indonesia, with its natural and cultural wealth, is becoming a major player on this global stage.
Solo and the New Spirit of Wellness Tourism
In developing wellness tourism, the Ministry of Tourism has established seven main categories: eco-nature tourism, jamu and herbal medicine, healthy culinary, lifestyle and fitness, arts, spiritual healing, and spa and ethno spa. Just from this list, Solo appears to have all the necessary assets.
Widiyanti believes Solo has a unique character capable of blending Javanese culture with modern health concepts.
"Like learning dance, making jamu, to healthy cuisine," she said.
No wonder, the city was then chosen as one of Indonesia's wellness destination hubs. The Surakarta City Government is even playing an active role. The local Tourism Office has prepared a series of culturally nuanced activities such as learning gendhing, traditional dancing, to making healthy Javanese specialty foods.
Furthermore, the Minister also highlighted the importance of attracting quality tourists willing to stay longer and spend more.
"We also want to target quality tourists who stay longer and have greater spending," she stated.
Indonesia as a Major Player in the Wellness Economy
Indonesia's serious focus on this sector is not without reason. Recent data shows that in 2023, Indonesia ranked first in Southeast Asia for the wellness economy, with a fantastic value reaching US$56.4 billion. Even more interestingly, Indonesia also became the third fastest-growing country in the Asia Pacific region in this sector.
These figures are not just statistics, but proof that wellness-based tourism is starting to become a new lifestyle, especially for urban young generations who need places to rest from the pressures of modern life.
Solo and Yogyakarta Take Center Stage
Surakarta Mayor, Respati Ardi, expressed his gratitude to the central government for entrusting Solo as the host of WIW 2025, which runs for a full month in Solo and Yogyakarta.
"Thank you for the trust of the Ministry of Tourism for making Solo one of the host cities for the wellness tourism event. With two main cultural pillars, the Keraton and Mangkunegaran Temple, we possess a wealth of cultural experiences ready to be integrated with the wellness tourism concept," he said.
The festival features five flagship programs blending local wisdom and immersive experiences:
1. Javanese Wisdom Immersion at Ndalem Joyokusuman
2. Gendhing For Therapy at Ndalem Mloyokusuman
3. Royal Dance Symphony at Ndalem Mloyokusuman
4. A Holy Journey at Baluwarti
5. Javanese Secret Recipe at Ndalem Joyokusuman
These activities are designed so tourists can truly immerse themselves in the healthy Javanese cultural lifestyle, from meditation and traditional music for therapy, to spice and jamu-based culinary arts.
Economic Impact and New Hope
Deputy for Event Organizer Development at the Ministry, Vincencius Jemadu, stated that the Wonderful Indonesia Wellness program is one of the national flagship programs. The target is ambitious: 5,000 wellness tourism packages sold during the event period.
"This program is very special because it falls into the special interest tourism category," he explained.
Not only for tourists, this event also opens huge opportunities for MSME players. The government targets transactions between Rp8.5-9 billion, as well as opening and closing event ticket sales worth Rp4.5-5 billion.
"Tonight alone, there are already 1,000 spectators present," he added.
From Books to New Tourism Inspiration
At the opening of WIW 2025, the Ministry also launched the book "Wellness Journey Across the Java Wonder." This book serves as a guide for tourism industry players like travel agents and tour operators to arrange wellness tourism packages in the Solo, Yogyakarta, and Central Java regions.
This publication is hoped to become a reference for elevating wellness-based tourism potential to an international level. Imagine, Yoga amidst rice fields, learning to pound jamu in an ancient pendopo, or meditation accompanied by slow gamelan music at dusk in Yogyakarta.
This is the concept they want to highlight: that vacation isn't just about going far away, but about rediscovering inner balance in places rich with meaning.
WIW 2025 is proof that Indonesia isn't just selling its natural beauty, but also offering a healthy lifestyle rooted in local culture. Solo and Yogyakarta now stand at the forefront of Asia's wellness tourism movement, becoming new magnets for tourists seeking tranquility, fitness, and authentic experiences in the Land of Java.
