Former world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has opened a new chapter in his professional career. The fighter who once held the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO world titles returns to the elite ranks of international boxing after finalising an agreement with leading fight promotion firm Matchroom Boxing.

This deal marks a clear declaration that Ruiz is ready to compete at the sport's highest level once again, following multiple years of very limited in-ring activity. The Mexican heritage fighter has publicly restated his ambition to recapture the world heavyweight crown.

Per official confirmation from the World Boxing Council, Ruiz is scheduled to make his ring return on 4 September in Newark, New Jersey. He is lined up to face unbeaten Polish contender Damian Knyba for the bout.

"Ruiz is targeted to compete on 4 September in Newark, New Jersey, with dangerous Polish puncher Damian Knyba confirmed as the overwhelming favourite to be his opponent," read the official announcement published on the WBC website.

Andy Ruiz Jr. exploded onto the global boxing stage in June 2019, when he pulled off one of the most shocking upsets in modern boxing history.

On that night at Madison Square Garden in New York, he stopped Anthony Joshua inside seven rounds to seize all the major world heavyweight championship belts.

This historic victory made Ruiz the first ever fighter of Mexican descent to hold the recognised world heavyweight championship.

While he surrendered all his titles in an immediate rematch just months later, this achievement remains one of the most iconic milestones of his entire career.

But after that career peak, Ruiz's competitive progress stalled dramatically. Over the last six years he has only fought on three occasions, with his most recent ring appearance ending in a draw against Jarrell Miller.

Against this backdrop, the Matchroom Boxing agreement is widely regarded as a critical lifeline to resurrect his career. The British promotion team maintain they believe Ruiz still retains the elite level ability to challenge for world honours again.

Matchroom Boxing have stated the 36 year old still has unfinished business in the heavyweight division, and that with full promotional backing behind him he now has a clear route back into world title contention.

Ruiz has reacted with huge excitement to the new partnership. He has reaffirmed his driving goal to become world champion once more and represent Mexico at the very top of global boxing.

"I am taking this next step forward to complete my mission: to become a two time world heavyweight champion for Mexico," he commented.

The fighter known by his ring nickname 'The Destroyer' also expressed gratitude for this fresh opportunity to rebuild his career, after navigating a long difficult period away from consistent competition.
