After scoring a goal against Morocco, Mbappe overtakes Messi from the top position of the 2026 World Cup top scorers list.

French forward Kylian Mbappé has overtaken Lionel Messi from the top spot of the 2026 World Cup provisional top scorers list. With one additional goal, Mbappé has equalled Messi's total goal count, but leads on number of assists.

Mbappé added to his goal tally during France's quarter-final fixture against Morocco. His curled strike into the right-hand side of Morocco's goal could not be reached by Yassine Bono.

After the match against Morocco, Mbappé now holds a record of eight goals and two assists. Meanwhile, Messi sits in second position on the top scorers rankings with eight goals and one assist.

Behind Mbappé and Messi, Erling Haaland remains in contention. The Norwegian striker has also collected seven goals, but is yet to record a single assist.

Elsewhere, England forward Harry Kane occupies fourth place with a tally of six goals and one assist.

The Three Lions captain still has the chance to close the gap on his rivals if he puts in a sharp performance in the quarter-final round.

Messi has the opportunity to reclaim the top position on the provisional top scorers list, as Argentina are yet to play their quarter-final match against Switzerland on Sunday 12 July 2026.
