Mexico began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a highly dramatic victory in their Group A opening match at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, early Friday WIB. Marred by three straight red cards, El Tri defeated South Africa 2-0 while playing in front of tens of thousands of home supporters.
The match was played at extreme high intensity. Alongside the two goals scored by the host nation, the fixture also produced a number of controversial moments. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio issued straight red cards to two South African players and one Mexican player over the course of the game.
Mexico demonstrated clear ambition to secure victory on home soil. Javier Aguirre's squad took full control of the match right from the opening minute, and broke the deadlock just nine minutes into the fixture.

Sphephelo Sithole is the first player to receive a red card at the 2026 World Cup.
The opening goal originated from a defensive error by South Africa. Erik Lira won possession inside South Africa's defensive area before laying the ball off to Julian Quinones, who struck a low driven shot that slipped past the legs of Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
This goal not only gave Mexico their lead, but also set the record as the fastest goal scored in a World Cup opening match since Philipp Lahm netted for Germany in the 6th minute against Costa Rica during the 2006 tournament.
South Africa attempted to mount a response, but struggled to escape the aggressive pressing applied by the hosts. Mexico dominated ball possession and created multiple dangerous attacking chances, holding their 1-0 lead through to the half time break.
The situation worsened further for the African side when Sphephelo Sithole was shown a straight red card in the 49th minute for a foul committed against Brian Gutierrez.
With the numerical advantage, Mexico gained even more freedom to dictate the pace of the match. After Raul Jimenez's Free kick struck the defensive wall, sustained attacking pressure from Mexico finally yielded a second goal in the 67th minute.
Raul Jimenez doubled Mexico's lead to 2-0 with an accurate header, connecting cleanly with a cross delivered from the right flank. The crowd inside Estadio Azteca erupted, as El Tri moved within touching distance of full time victory.
Further drama unfolded in the 83rd minute. Following a VAR review, Themba Zwane received a straight red card for striking Roberto Alvarado in the face while attempting to break free from a defensive challenge, leaving South Africa to play the remainder of the match with only 9 players on the pitch.
Even holding a two goal and two player advantage, Mexico did not avoid disciplinary issues entirely. During stoppage time, defender Cesar Montes was also shown a straight red card after being judged to have denied Khuliso Mudau a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Montes' dismissal did not alter the final outcome of the match however, as Mexico successfully defended their 2-0 lead until the final whistle was blown.
This result moves Mexico to the top of the provisional Standings for Group A with 3 points. South Africa meanwhile leave their opening fixture defeated, and now sit at the very bottom of the group table.
South Korea and the Czech Republic will play their first group match on Friday at 09:00 WIB.
