The opening match of the 2026 World Cup will pit host nation Mexico against South Africa at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, kicking off in the early hours of Friday 12 June WIB. This is no ordinary opening fixture: it will be a reprisal of an iconic World Cup moment.
At the 2010 World Cup, host nation South Africa played out a 1-1 Draw against Mexico in Johannesburg. 16 years later, the two sides meet once again in the same tournament curtain-raiser scenario. The only difference this time is that Mexico will hold home advantage, performing in front of tens of thousands of their own supporters.
Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has voiced immense excitement for the fixture. For him, competing at a World Cup held on home soil is an unmatched experience.

"Across 50 years involved in Football, there is no greater feeling than playing at a World Cup hosted in your own country. I have lived every experience this sport can offer, but this is something truly unforgettable," stated Aguirre.
Aguirre knows the atmosphere of this tournament first hand. When Mexico hosted the 1986 World Cup, he was part of the El Tri squad that advanced all the way to the Quarter Finals, before being eliminated by Germany on penalties.
Now at the helm as coach, the 67-year-old is aiming to write another proud chapter for Mexican football in front of their home public.
The 2026 World Cup marks Mexico's 18th appearance at the finals tournament. Most notably, this is the third time the nation has hosted the competition, following the 1970 and 1986 editions.
Mexico hold an impressive record when playing World Cup matches at home. On both previous hosting occasions, the side progressed to the Quarter Final stage, carried by the overwhelming backing of their supporters.
For this reason, Aguirre wants his squad to use this opening match as a foundation to build confidence for the long tournament journey ahead.
"I want to instill belief in the players: that this can be a great day for us, that no matter what unfolds the public will stand with us, and that this will be a celebration remembered for decades," Aguirre said.
Despite his optimism, Aguirre has warned his side against underestimating South Africa. He noted that Bafana Bafana are a dangerous opponent with strong motivation to pull off an opening upset.
"This team has improved consistently. We are all fully prepared to start this World Cup properly. I have full confidence this will be a good day for us," he added.
South Africa Hoping For Fortunate Fortune
On the opposing side, South Africa arrive in Mexico City labelled as tournament underdogs. Hugo Broos' side secured their World Cup spot after delivering consistent performances throughout the qualification campaign.
Bafana Bafana finished top of Group C with 18 points, sealing their return to the World Cup finals after a long absence from global football's biggest stage.
For Hugo Broos, facing the host nation in the tournament opener is far from a simple task. This challenge is amplified by the fixture being held at one of the world's most iconic stadiums, amid intense atmosphere from the home crowd.
"This will be an extremely demanding match. We will have to perform at our absolute maximum, and we will also need a little bit of luck," commented Broos.
The 74-year-old coach stated that good fortune will be a critical factor when taking on Mexico.
Even so, Broos confirmed his side will not Travel just to make up the numbers. He is confident the South African squad are ready to put up a full, committed fight for the entire duration of the match.
"I can guarantee my team is ready, and we will fight hard for the full 90 minutes. After that, we will see what the final result brings," the 74-year-old coach concluded.
