Analyst Reveals The Strategy That The Indonesian National Team Must Use When Facing Cambodia At The 2026 AFF Cup.

Indonesia's national football team will begin their 2026 AFF Cup campaign against Cambodia at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor, on Monday 27 July 2026 at 20.30 WIB. While the Garuda Squad are the clear favourites on paper, this opening fixture is not expected to play out easily.

Indonesian football analyst Mohamad Kusnaeni assessed that coach John Herdman must develop a new match formula so Indonesia can maximise the potential of their available players and secure the best possible result in this opening game.

"Coach John Herdman needs to find a new system that works with the player resources he currently has. This includes adjusting the game plan to unlock the full potential of this current squad," Mohamad Kusnaeni stated when confirmed in Jakarta on Monday, 27 July 2026.

According to Kusnaeni, the current player composition of Indonesia's national squad is different compared to the lineups fielded in their four previous matches. These changes require Herdman to make a series of adjustments, both to overall strategy and in-match approach.

"There are many adjustments that must be made, given the significant differences in the available player pool," he stated.

Despite this, he predicts Herdman will retain his preferred formations: either the 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1. However, tactical execution across every line of the pitch will certainly be modified to match the characteristics of the players currently available for selection.

John Herdman Urged To Adjust Forward Line Tactics

Kusnaeni highlighted the different profile of Indonesia's current attacking options. The absence of players with Ole Romeny's playing style means the team's attacking approach must be adapted.

He assessed that Mitchell Baker and Jens Raven are target man forwards who operate most effectively when provided with accurate, well-timed final passes from their teammates.

"This means the formation and starting lineup must be built to properly create and supply chances for Baker or Raven," he said.

For this reason, creativity from the midfield and wide players will be the critical factor to both open up space and generate scoring opportunities for the two strikers.

Defensive Line Must Uphold Discipline

Alongside the attacking department, Kusnaeni also identified defensive organisation as the key to Indonesia securing victory. While Cambodia are generally regarded as being below the Garuda Squad in overall quality, Indonesia's players are still required to play with full discipline and avoid lapses in concentration.

Cambodia themselves will enter the match with high motivation, after suffering a narrow 1-2 defeat to Singapore courtesy of a very late conceding goal. This result is expected to drive them to play aggressively as they chase their first points of the tournament.

"Indonesia can emerge victorious if they execute these two things correctly. Up front they must be creative delivering quality service for the strikers, while at the back they must remain disciplined and fully focused," he stated.
