Indonesia National Team head coach John Herdman expressed satisfaction with his squad's performance after securing a dominant 5-1 victory over Cambodia in their opening Group A match of the 2026 AFF Cup. The fixture was held at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor Regency, West Java on the evening of Monday, 27 July 2026.

According to Herdman, this win was not just about claiming three points - it also served as proof that the playing identity cultivated during the preparation period is now beginning to translate onto the pitch.

"Today was all about executing our tactical identity, and bringing the work we have put in over the last three weeks into this match. I am happy with how the players performed, their effort, and the final result we achieved," stated Herdman in the post-match press conference.

The Canadian coach praised his players for successfully implementing the game plan properly. Solid cohesion, fighting spirit, and teamwork between players were identified as the key factors behind the Garuda Squad's convincing win.

"There is real unity within this team. They fight together, play as one, and you can see they are enjoying themselves out there," he added.

Refusing To Get Complacent With Victory

Despite registering an impressive result in their opening fixture, Herdman emphasised that the squad will not dwell on this win. Focus has already shifted immediately to their next match against Timor Leste, which will be hosted in Chonburi, Thailand.

He noted that every match in the tournament carries its own unique characteristics and challenges, meaning all players must remain fully focused at all times.

"We will celebrate a little tonight, but after that we reset and turn our full attention to the next game. Every match is different, and we have to be ready to face whatever challenge comes next," he stated.

Rotation As Part Of Match Strategy

Herdman also explained the reasoning behind the multiple player substitutions made during the second half. Rotation is part of the squad's strategy to maintain player fitness, especially given the tight fixture schedule of the 2026 AFF Cup.

He confirmed that several players are not yet at peak physical condition, having only recently joined the national team camp or still lacking regular match minutes at their respective club sides.

"We have to look after the condition of every player. Clubs across Indonesia have given us tremendous support by releasing their players for this tournament, so we also have a responsibility to keep them fit and healthy," he remarked.

During this match, Mitchell Lee Baker caught the public eye by scoring a hat-trick on his official debut for the Indonesia National Team. The remaining two goals were netted by Sandy Walsh and Jens Raven, sealing Indonesia's comprehensive win over Cambodia.

This positive result provides valuable momentum for Indonesia ahead of their second Group A fixture against Timor Leste, which will take place in Chonburi, Thailand.
