Julian Quinones has become one of the first names etched into the history books of the 2026 World Cup. The Mexico National Team striker expressed his joy after his goal against South Africa made him the very first goalscorer of the 2026 edition of the world's biggest football tournament.

This historic moment unfolded as Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the Group A opening match at Estadio Azteca, early Friday WIB. Quinones' 9th minute goal set El Tri on the path to victory, before Raul Jimenez sealed all three points with a second goal in the second half.

For Quinones, scoring in the World Cup opening match is an incredibly special achievement. This feat carried even more weight as it was accomplished in front of tens of thousands of Mexico supporters that packed his country's iconic national stadium.

"I am happy to score my first World Cup goal, in this incredible stadium alongside these fantastic fans," stated Quinones, as quoted from FIFA's official website.

Quinones' early goal lifted Mexico's team morale. The host nation dominated the full duration of the match, eventually securing a comfortable clean sheet victory.

Despite becoming the main focus of attention for netting the tournament's opening goal, Quinones refused to place himself at the centre of praise. The 29-year old stressed that team victory holds far greater importance than any individual accomplishment.

He stated that Mexico securing their first three tournament points was the product of collective hard work from every player on the squad.

"It is important for me to recognise everything my teammates did to get us these first three points," he added.

Quinones also highlighted the extraordinary enthusiasm displayed by Mexico supporters in the days leading up to the match, noting this fan backing was a critical factor that allowed the team to perform with confidence on opening day.

He cited the unity between players and supporters as one of the core keys that allowed Mexico to begin their 2026 World Cup campaign with a win. The thunderous atmosphere inside Estadio Azteca throughout the full 90 minutes stood as clear proof of this strong bond.

This win over South Africa puts Mexico at the top of the provisional Group A Standings with three points, and provides vital momentum for the remaining group stage fixtures.

Having successfully opened the tournament with victory, Mexico have now shifted full focus to their second match. El Tri are scheduled to face South Korea at Estadio Guadalajara, Zapopan on Friday 19 June 2026.
