Sphephelo Sithole has etched his name into the history of the 2026 World Cup — though not in the manner he would have wished. This South African national team defender became the first player ever shown a red card at this tournament, sent off during the opening Group A fixture against the host nation at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, early Friday local WIB time.
The incident unfolded four minutes after the second half kicked off, at exactly the 49th minute. At that point, Mexico were pushing to extend their advantage, having finished the first half 1-0 up following an early goal from Julian Quinones in the 9th minute.
The sequence began when Brian Gutierrez collected a through ball and slipped past South Africa's defensive line. The young Mexican midfielder broke clear towards goal with a very high chance of scoring his side's second goal.

Caught as the last remaining defender, Sithole had almost no other options available. To stop Gutierrez's run, he committed a foul right on the edge of the penalty area.
Brazilian match referee Wilton Sampaio issued an immediate firm decision. After reviewing the position and context of the challenge, he showed Sithole a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
This ruling officially confirmed Sithole as the first player to receive a red card at the 2026 World Cup.
The numerical advantage gave Mexico total control over the match tempo. Mexico continued to dominate possession and applied sustained pressure against the outnumbered South African defence.
Things deteriorated further for the African side late in the match. In the 83rd minute, Themba Zwane was also shown a straight red card after he was caught striking Roberto Alvarado in the face while attempting to break Free from marking.
This second dismissal forced South Africa to play out the rest of the match with only 9 players on the pitch. Already trailing on the scoreboard and now down two men, any realistic chance of a comeback vanished almost entirely.
The red card drama was not yet finished. Deep into stoppage time, Mexican defender Cesar Montes was also sent off, ruled to have denied Khuliso Mudau a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Even so, Montes' late dismissal did not change the final outcome. Mexico successfully held their 2-0 lead until the full time whistle sounded.
The first red card of every World Cup is permanently logged in the tournament's official statistics. For the 2026 edition, Sphephelo Sithole will be permanently recorded as the first player to leave the pitch early after receiving the referee's maximum disciplinary sanction.
