2026 FIFA World Cup is not merely a stage for Argentina to defend their world Champion title. This tournament hosted across United States, Canada and Mexico could also become a historic milestone for Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni. He holds the opportunity to equal one of the rarest records in the history of World Football.

After leading Argentina to lift the 2022 World Cup trophy in Qatar, Scaloni stands at the threshold of an achievement no manager has ever accomplished across 22 World Cup editions. Should he successfully guide the Albiceleste to victory once again in 2026, he will match the late Vittorio Pozzo's record as a manager who won back-to-back World Cup titles.

Pozzo led Italy to win the tournament in 1934 then successfully retained the title in 1938 - a record that has remained unbroken for 88 years.

Ever since that era, multiple elite managers have attempted to reach this milestone, only to fall short at the very final step every time.

One such figure was Carlos Bilardo. He successfully brought Argentina to the World Cup final in both 1986 and 1990. However, he only lifted the trophy in the 1986 edition, before settling for runner-up position four years later.

Remarkably, Argentina faced Franz Beckenbauer's West Germany in both of these finals. After defeat in the 1986 final, Beckenbauer got his revenge by leading his squad to World Cup victory in 1990.

The exact same narrative played out for Didier Deschamps. He guided France to win the 2018 World Cup and returned to the final in 2022. Yet Les Bleus failed to defend their crown, losing out to Argentina after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Mario Zagallo and Helmut Schön also both reached two consecutive World Cup finals. Zagallo led Brazil to glory in 1970 but lost the subsequent final, while Schön experienced the opposite: he finished as runner-up in 1966 before claiming the world title in 1974.

Now, history has presented Scaloni the chance to etch his name alongside Pozzo. The 48-year old coach enters the 2026 World Cup with extremely strong foundations.

Argentina do not only hold status as reigning world champions, they have also lifted the Copa America trophy for the last two consecutive editions. This consistent track record places the Albiceleste firmly among the top tournament favourites once again.

With a squad balancing seasoned veteran players and rising young talent, Argentina has solid ground to compete all the way to the final stages of the tournament. That said, defending a world title has always remained one of the most difficult challenges in International Football.

Expectations for Argentina have also grown exponentially after their run as the world's top performing national side in recent years. Every opposing team will take the field with extra motivation to defeat the reigning champions.
