The race for the 2026 World Cup top goalscorer title has grown increasingly tight after all 48 teams completed their second group stage fixtures. Lionel Messi remains at the top of the tournament's interim top scorers ranking.
The Argentine captain once again demonstrated his world class ability, leading the Albiceleste to a 2-0 victory over Austria in their second Group J match hosted at Dallas Stadium, United States.
Messi's goals in the 38th and 90+5th minutes did not only secure Argentina's win, they also confirmed the defending champions' qualification to the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.

This brace against Austria brings La Pulga's total tournament goal tally to five.
Messi's clinical finishing is one of the core factors behind Argentina's perfect winning start across their opening two matches. The superstar continues to prove age is no barrier to being the difference maker on the biggest stage of World Football.
Even so, the battle for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot remains completely wide open. Trailing Messi are two forwards applying consistent pressure: Kylian Mbappé of France and Erling Haaland of Norway, both sitting level on four goals each.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has entered the race with two goals to his name. While the Portugal captain is not yet in the leading group, his tournament experience and natural goalscoring instinct cannot be dismissed.
Beyond the established global stars, Germany forward Deniz Undav also stands as a strong contender.
Undav has recorded three goals and two assists from just 69 total minutes of game time so far.
With the vast majority of the tournament still remaining, the contest between Messi, Mbappé, Haaland, Ronaldo and all other competing forwards will be one of the most compelling storylines throughout the 2026 World Cup.
As it stands, Lionel Messi holds the lead in this race. But the road to the top goalscorer title is still long, and every remaining fixture has the potential to completely reshape the standings dramatically.
