The return of global Tennis Legend Serena Williams has finally become reality. After almost four years away from top-level professional competition, the holder of 23 singles Grand Slam titles will make her return to the WTA Tour this week.

Serena is scheduled to play her comeback match at the HSBC Championships hosted at Queen's Club, London. For this event, the former world number one will compete in the Women's Doubles Draw alongside young Canadian professional Victoria Mboko.

"Queen's Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter," Williams was quoted by the WTA on Monday, 8 June 2026.

"Grass courts have given me some of the most meaningful moments of my entire career, and I am thrilled to be competing again on one of the most iconic stages in this sport."

This appearance at Queen's Club marks a significant milestone for Serena: this will be her first official WTA Tour match since she last competed back in 2022. She was awarded a wildcard entry into the doubles draw of this prestigious grass court tournament.

In the opening round, Serena and Mboko will face the third seeded pair Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, in a match scheduled for Tuesday.

While she is making her return via doubles competition, Serena's record in this discipline is beyond question. Alongside her older sister Venus Williams, she collected 22 career doubles titles and holds an unblemished perfect record of winning all 14 Grand Slam finals they contested together.

Notably, Queen's Club is one tournament Serena never competed at during her entire prior professional career. This event only returned to the official WTA calendar in 2025, following an absence spanning more than five decades.

Serena's arrival has also been met with an enthusiastic welcome from Victoria Mboko, her doubles partner for the tournament.

"Serena and I have stayed in contact, which is just really, really special, because I admire her so much," Mboko stated at Roland Garros last week.

"I mean, the fact that she even knows who I am is just amazing. She is my idol."

Mboko revealed Serena has followed the progress of her career over recent years. The United States Tennis Legend also sent her personal messages of support multiple times through different stages of her professional journey.

Before confirming her return, Serena last played professionally at the 2022 US Open. At that tournament she produced standout form, defeating Danka Kovinic and second seed Anett Kontaveit to reach the third round.

Her run was ended by Ajla Tomljanovic in a match widely believed at the time to be the final match of her career, with the final scoreline 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1.

At that same 2022 US Open, Serena also competed in doubles alongside Venus Williams. Their campaign ended in the first round, after they were beaten 7-6, 6-4 by Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecka.

Now at 44 years old, Serena has set a new record as the oldest former world number one to return to WTA Tour competition following retirement. She surpasses the previous benchmark set by Martina Navratilova, who made her own comeback aged 43 in the year 2000.

Off the court, Serena is now mother to two daughters. But within tennis, her name remains remembered as one of the most influential and successful athletes in the entire history of the sport.

Across her career, Serena won 73 WTA singles titles and held the world number one ranking for 186 consecutive weeks, matching the long-standing record previously held by Stefanie Graf.

This comeback at Queen's Club also marks a full circle moment for Serena. This match takes place exactly 31 years to the day after her very first professional match, when she was only 14 years old.

On that debut appearance, Serena was defeated by fellow American player Annie Miller in the qualifying rounds of a tournament in Quebec City. Just four years later, she would claim her first Grand Slam title, and begin an era of dominance over world tennis that lasted more than two decades.
