Roger Federer has long left the tennis spotlight, yet his passion for world-class sports has never waned. Ahead of World Cup 2026, the Swiss Tennis Legend admits to having one personal agenda: watching Lionel Messi compete in football's biggest tournament.

Federer officially retired in 2022. He now frequently attends exhibition matches and special invitations.

Australia was his latest destination. Amid these activities, the 44-year-old remains a devoted football enthusiast.

Beyond supporting the Swiss National Team, he pays special attention to Messi with the Argentine National Team

For Federer, the 2026 World Cup will showcase a different Messi—more liberated, calmer, yet still under immense pressure.

“I'm glad he's already won the World Cup, so that burden is off his shoulders. Still, playing in the tournament always carries pressure,” Federer told World Soccer Talk News.

Switzerland has secured its spot in the 2026 World Cup finals, opening the possibility for Federer to attend matches live.

He hasn't ruled out making special trips to North America to watch both teams he supports compete.

“I'll definitely watch the World Cup. Since Switzerland qualified, there's a strong chance I'll be there,” said the legend nicknamed King Roger.

Though often jointly hailed as GOATs, Federer rejects comparisons with Messi.

He believes Messi stands alone as a football icon whose talent transcends cross-sport analogies.

“It's very hard to compare us. He's achieved so much greatness in football, and I'm his huge fan,” Federer stated.

The 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Switzerland is in Group B, while Argentina is in Group J.
