Airports are no longer merely places for travellers to arrive and depart. In Makassar, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport is projected to become the new face of South Sulawesi Tourism promotion, as well as the gateway that introduces the cultural wealth and leading destinations of Eastern Indonesia to visiting tourists.
This commitment is being realised through collaboration between PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (API) and the Makassar City Government. Both parties have agreed to utilise public spaces within the airport as a showcase for regional Tourism Promotion.
This initiative is expected to attract higher tourist numbers, while also strengthening Makassar's position as the primary entry point to various tourist destinations across the Eastern Indonesia region.

"This step is expected to boost Tourist Visit Numbers while reinforcing Makassar's reputation as the main gateway for Indonesian Tourist Destinations in the East," stated Ruly Artha, General Manager of Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.
The collaboration is not only focused on promoting tourist destinations, but also covers promotion for various regional agendas, festivals, and cultural activities that serve as the main attractions of South Sulawesi.
All available promotional media across the airport premises will be utilised to introduce the region's leading potentials to all airport passengers.
According to Ruly, Sultan Hasanuddin Airport is currently undergoing a major transformation. Its role has been expanded: no longer only functioning as an air transport hub, but also as a public space that delivers a tourism experience from the very first moment a tourist sets foot in South Sulawesi.
He emphasised that Sultan Hasanuddin Airport is evolving beyond just a passenger arrival and departure facility, into a new Tourist Destination itself that can showcase various attractions, culture, and regional programmes to the wider public.
The presence of cultural events and attractions is identified as one of the key factors to drive tourist movement.
For this reason, Angkasa Pura Indonesia is fully committed to supporting the promotion of all regional activities, both through existing advertising facilities at the airport, as well as by hosting on-site small events to capture the attention of air service users.
As the primary aviation hub in the Eastern Indonesia region, Sultan Hasanuddin Airport holds a strategic position to reach tourists from across the country and even overseas.
This potential is expected to be maximised to introduce the leading tourist destinations of South Sulawesi to a wider audience.
Through this integrated promotion approach, transit passengers are expected to do more than simply wait during their layover before continuing their journey.
Instead, it is hoped that they will be compelled to explore South Sulawesi's tourist spots, and even extend the duration of their visit.
Beyond that, the airport will also function as a creative space for local artists and communities. Various works of art, Cultural Heritage, and signature creative products from South Sulawesi will later be exhibited through dedicated stages and display areas provided within the airport premises.
This initiative opens up wider opportunities for Creative Economy actors to introduce their works to tourists arriving from all around the world.
At the same time, passengers will enjoy a more memorable experience, as they are welcomed with a strong local cultural atmosphere right from the moment they enter the airport terminal.
With this initiative, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport operates not only as a transport gateway, but also as a tourism showcase that introduces the charm of South Sulawesi to the global audience.
This transformation also reinforces ongoing efforts to establish Makassar as the central connectivity and tourism promotion hub for Eastern Indonesia.
