Indonesia's hopes at the 2026 Japan Open remain alive thanks to the impressive performance of men's singles badminton player Alwi Farhan. Meanwhile, two other Indonesian representatives have been eliminated: Moh Zaki Ubaidillah failed to get past Anders Antonsen, while the pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama / Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani lost to Ben Lane / Sean Vend.

The victory over French representative Alex Lanier at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Thursday, 16 July 2026, secured Alwi a spot in the quarter-finals of this Super 750 tournament.

Alwi's match against Lanier got off to a difficult start in the opening game. He rallied after dropping the first set to mount a comeback

The match was tight early on before the French player pulled away to take an 11-4 lead at the interval. Alwi struggled to break free from his opponent's pressure and eventually conceded the first game 9-21.

Entering the second game, Alwi's play changed drastically. The young Indonesian shuttler came out far more aggressively right from the start, holding an 11-7 lead at the mid-game interval.

This advantage was maintained all the way to the end of the game. Alwi closed out the second set with a 21-14 win, forcing the match into a deciding third game.

Alwi carried this positive momentum into the final game. He played dominantly, building an 11-6 lead at the interval. After the break, he maintained consistent play to seal the victory with a 21-16 scoreline.

This result sees Alwi advance to the quarter-final round, while keeping Indonesia's chances of claiming success at the 2026 Japan Open alive.

Elsewhere, Moh Zaki Ubaidillah's run was ended at the hands of Denmark's seeded player Anders Antonsen.

Zaki struggled to match his opponent's rhythm in the first game, falling to a 12-21 defeat.

He put up a much fiercer fight in the second set.

Both players were locked level at 17-17 before Antonsen claimed the crucial final points to close out the match 21-19.

The same fate befell men's doubles pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama / Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. Facing the English pairing Ben Lane / Sean Vend, Sabar and Reza were unable to find their best form throughout the match.

They dropped the first game 11-21 before suffering another 17-21 loss in the second set, bringing their campaign to an end in the Round of 16.
