The 2026 World Cup has finally reached its climax. Two footballing powerhouses, the Spanish National Team and Argentine National Team, will face each other in the final match at New York New Jersey Stadium, United States, on Monday 20 July 2026 at 02:00 WIB.

This final stands as one of the most anticipated matches of the entire tournament. Spain are aiming to lift the World Cup trophy once more, bringing an end to their 16-year wait. Argentina meanwhile have the opportunity to make history as the first nation to successfully defend the world champion title since Brazil achieved this feat in 1962.

Spain sealed their place in the showpiece match after beating France 2-0 in the semi-finals. Luis de la Fuente's side took the lead via a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty in the 22nd minute, before Pedro Porro doubled their advantage in the second half.

This result returns La Roja to the World Cup final for the first time since their victorious campaign in South Africa 2010.

Argentina on the other hand were forced to fight hard to confirm their spot in the final. The Albiceleste fell behind first when Anthony Gordon scored for England in the 55th minute, but Lionel Scaloni's side mounted a late fightback.

Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute, before Lautaro Martinez struck the winning goal from Lionel Messi's cross deep into injury time.

This dramatic 2-1 victory has qualified Argentina for back-to-back World Cup finals.

Clash of Two Contrasting Philosophies

The 2026 World Cup final will pit two entirely different playing styles against one another. Spain are recognised for their patient ball possession, tight tactical organisation and ability to dictate match tempo.

Argentina by contrast operate with greater flexibility, relying on sharp effective counter attacks and the individual creativity of Lionel Messi to break down opposition defences.

As well as competing for football's most prestigious trophy, this match also presents Lionel Messi the chance to add another international honour to his record, while cementing Argentina's status as defending world champions.

France vs England Third Place Playoff

Prior to the final, the 2026 World Cup will host the third place decider between France and England at Miami Stadium, United States, on Sunday 19 July 2026 at 04:00 WIB.

France missed out on a final spot following their 0-2 semi final defeat to Spain. Les Bleus were unable to breach La Roja's solid defence and were ultimately outplayed over the 90 minutes.

England meanwhile were eliminated in devastating fashion, after failing to hold onto their late lead against Argentina.

Despite only third place being at stake, the meeting between France and England is still predicted to be a fiercely contested fixture. Both squads are packed with world class talent, and both will be determined to conclude their 2026 World Cup campaign on a positive result.
