The Liverpool versus Manchester United clash is never just an ordinary match, often filled with drama. For Liverpool Manager Arne Slot, this weekend's North-West Derby is not only about prestige but also a moment for his team's resurgence after a trend of negative results.

Liverpool will host Manchester United in the eighth week of the 2025/2026 Premier League at Anfield, Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 22:30 WIB. The Reds arrive under heavy pressure after suffering three consecutive defeats – two in the Premier League and one in the Champions League.

“I don't think it matters who we play on Sunday. If you lose three times in a row and you wear the Liverpool shirt, whoever the opponent is, you have to react,” said Slot in the pre-match press conference quoted from the official Premier League website.

Productive But Vulnerable to Counter-Attacks

Across those three defeats, Liverpool conceded five goals and scored only two. Even two of the five goals conceded came in the final minutes, such as in the 1-2 losses to Crystal Palace and Chelsea. Slot acknowledged his team's weakness isn't about spirit, but defensive structure.

"If there's one thing I can't blame the players for, it's because they have given everything in every match, they have given their all from the first minute to the last.”

Tactically, however, Slot highlighted two things: a decrease in the number of chances created compared to last season and a defence that is too easily breached.

“Compared to last season, we haven't created as many chances as we did early last season. However, we are still a team that creates many chances and shots on target from open play, but we are conceding too many goals,” he explained.

In more detail, Slot mapped out the 9 goals conceded by Liverpool: 4 from set pieces and 5 from counter-attacks and open play.

A Special Derby, A Dangerous Opponent Despite Mid-Table Position

In the standings, Liverpool are in second place with 15 points, while Ruben Amorim's Manchester United are in 10th place with 10 points. But Slot refuses to judge United by the table.

"United started this season better than their league position suggests, so it's a very exciting match, especially at Anfield,” he said.

First-Choice Keeper Absent, Two Defensive Pillars Recover

Liverpool are confirmed to be without Alisson Becker, who is still injured. However, there is good news: Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konaté are likely to return to action.

Gravenberch was injured while playing for the Netherlands in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers (Europe zone), while Konaté was injured against Chelsea.
