The thundering curtain of water cascading down the circular cliff at Tumpak Sewu blends with the lush green vegetation that delights the eye. In another corner, Teras Semeru offers the grandeur of cool mountain scenery that soothes the soul. This pristine, untouched natural landscape isn't just ordinary scenery, but the primary magnet now placing Lumajang Regency, East Java, on the World Tourism map.
This authentic natural landscape's appeal has proven successful in captivating thousands of Foreign Tourists. Based on data from the Lumajang Regency Tourism Office for the short period of 14-31 March 2026, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall attracted 3,558 foreign tourist visits. Meanwhile, the mountain charm of Teras Semeru recorded 1,271 international tourist visits.
As a hidden natural treasure in Pronojiwo District, the allure of Tumpak Sewu far surpasses mere ordinary scenery. This destination, often dubbed "Indonesia's Niagara," showcases the grandeur of the Glidik River flow—which originates directly from the slopes of Mount Semeru—crashing against exotic karst cliffs and creating a majestic natural symphony.
At the base of the valley, its splashing waters perpetually create a fine, eternal mist that refracts sunlight into magical hues, enchanting every onlooker. It is this perfect, emotionally stirring charm that ultimately always makes every Traveler reluctant to leave, carrying home memories of the eternal landscape's grandeur that affirms Lumajang's status as the heart of world-class ecotourism.
Responding to the Global Ecotourism Trend
This high enthusiasm among foreign tourists aligns with the shift in global Tourism Trends post-pandemic. Currently, global traveler preferences are shifting from crowded conventional destinations towards nature-based tourism.
Tourists are now seeking open spaces, clean air, and more authentic experiences. Unsurprisingly, tourism industry reports note that the Nature Tourism and ecotourism segments are experiencing rapid growth of about 10 to 15 percent annually. The tiered landscape of Tumpak Sewu and the highlands of Teras Semeru perfectly quench this thirst of global tourists.
Preserving Authenticity, Reviving the Economy
The Lumajang Regency Government fully recognizes the charm of this natural masterpiece as a valuable asset that must be protected. Lumajang Regent, Indah Amperawati, acknowledges that natural authenticity is the primary strength of the region's tourism.
"The main strength of the region lies in the quality of its natural landscape, where the main attraction is its natural authenticity. The challenge is maintaining the consistency of that experience quality," said Regent Indah as quoted by ANTARA on Monday (27/4/2026).
This awe-inspiring beauty demands great responsibility. Regent Indah emphasized that the surge in visitors must not damage the ecosystem. Therefore, regulating the area's carrying capacity and limiting the number of visitors become crucial.
On the other hand, this meticulously preserved natural landscape has proven to be a blessing for the surrounding community. The presence of foreign tourists directly revitalizes the local economic lifeblood, from tour guide services and local transportation to the vibrancy of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
From Lumajang, the world can see that preserved natural beauty is not only a visual attraction but also a strong foundation for building a quality, sustainable, and globally competitive tourism sector.
