Virgil van Dijk spoke about the fatal mistake that contributed to Liverpool's defeat by Bournemouth in the continuation of 2025/2026 Premier League. The senior defender of The Reds acknowledged his blunder, although he also scored a goal that revived the team's hopes.
Liverpool returned empty-handed from Vitality Stadium after losing 2-3 to Bournemouth on matchday 23, Sunday, January 25, 2026, early morning WIB. This defeat adds to The Reds' list of negative results in the top-flight competition.
The hosts Bournemouth took a two-goal lead through Evanilson and Alejandro Jimenez. Liverpool were under pressure before finally rallying just before halftime with Virgil van Dijk's headed goal from a corner, a strike that reopened opportunities for the visiting team.

Liverpool's momentum continued in the second half. Dominik Szoboszlai scored the equalizer in the 80th minute through a free-kick execution, bringing the score to 2-2. However, when a draw seemed imminent, Bournemouth snatched victory through Amine Adli's Injury-time goal.
Despite scoring the morale-boosting goal, Van Dijk believed he still bore responsibility for the loss. The Dutch national team defender made a crucial error in Bournemouth's first goal process, a moment he described as resembling a comedy scene.
In that situation, Van Dijk attempted to lift his leg to intercept the ball heading towards Alex Scott. However, the effort completely failed. After Van Dijk "kicked air," Scott quickly delivered a pass to Evanilson that resulted in a goal.
"The first goal, I think the ball was very unpredictable in that situation, the wind made it extremely difficult," Van Dijk explained regarding his blunder as quoted from Liverpool's official website.
"I think you could see it, especially when we played long balls on their side, it was very hard to predict the ball's direction."
"So conceding wasn't the main issue because I felt we controlled the game quite well."
"Then, when we played with 10 men, you could argue maybe we should have kicked the ball out or not, but conceding two goals in quick succession obviously wasn't good at all," he stated.
Van Dijk also emphasized the importance of his goal just before halftime. He believed this goal played a significant role in reviving Liverpool's mentality and spirit to chase the deficit in the second half.
"I think my goal before the break was crucial in gaining momentum and spirit for the second half," said the 34-year-old.
"I think we showed in the second half that we worked extremely hard to get back into the game with a great free-kick."
"I feel we also had several good chances, but ultimately the throw-in cost us," Van Dijk concluded.
This defeat felt especially bitter for Liverpool considering Bournemouth isn't known for solid defense this season. The Cherries have conceded 43 goals in 23 Premier League matches. Only West Ham United (45) and Burnley (44) have worse defensive records.
This result serves as a reminder that small mistakes at the highest level of the Premier League can lead to major consequences, even for a player of Virgil van Dijk's caliber.
