Prambanan Temple once again presents a different face for travelers. Not just as a historical icon and iconic photography spot, this world heritage site becomes a space for the convergence of spirituality, culture, and Sustainable Tourism through the Prambanan Shiva Festival 2026.

The festival was officially opened by Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Enik Ermawati in the Prambanan Temple area, located on the border of Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and Klaten Regency, Central Java, on Saturday afternoon, January 17, 2026. The opening marked the start of a series of events combining sacred rituals with a modern tourism approach.

"Through this Prambanan Shiva Festival, it is hoped that Prambanan Temple will present a harmony between spiritual values and economic impact for the community," said Ni Luh.

For tourists, the Prambanan Shiva Festival offers an experience different from a regular visit. Here, travelers don't just come to see the temple's grandeur, but are also invited to understand the spiritual meaning that has lived for hundreds of years. Ni Luh emphasized that this festival also strengthens Prambanan's position as a spiritual center for Hindus.

"Then, from the tourism side, we hope this will increase the number of Tourist Visits, both domestic and international, to Prambanan Temple," she said.

Furthermore, Ni Luh assessed that Prambanan has great strength as a world-class destination because it holds the concept of a living heritage. For the Younger Generation who enjoy meaningful travel, Prambanan becomes an example of how Cultural Heritage is not merely exhibited, but lived and cared for together.

"Prambanan Temple is a living Cultural Heritage, which we then care for, understand, and give an honored place in the midst of life. Spiritually, Prambanan Temple is no longer in doubt as a center for the worship of Lord Shiva, but of course we hope not only for spiritual value, but also for this spiritual value to bring benefits to the surrounding community," she said.

In the context of Sustainable Tourism, Ni Luh also mentioned the concept of people, planet, and prosperity as the foundation for destination development. According to her, ideal tourism should have a positive impact on people, protect the environment, and drive the local economy.

"The environment, our planet will also be preserved through tourism, and then prosperity brings economic benefits to its people. With the Prambanan Shiva Festival, hopefully it not only brings a higher spiritual impact but also impacts the people, nature, and economy of the community around Prambanan Temple," she said.

In line with this, Commercial Director of InJourney Destination Management (IDM) Gistang Richard Panutur emphasized that the Prambanan Shiva Festival is a form of destination management that balances sacred rituals with professional tourism governance.

"That balance brings characterful, quality tourism that grows and provides benefits. Prambanan Temple must continue to be preserved, both by the Hindu community elements and by tourism," he said.

For travelers, this festival is also a rare moment to witness a series of spiritual events not usually encountered on regular tourist visits. The peak activity features the Maha Shivaratri Celebration, an event inviting visitors to contemplate the sacred values of Lord Shiva as the source of the highest consciousness energy.

Chairman of the Daily Management Board of the Indonesian Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI) Major General (Ret.) Wisnu Bawa Tenaya explained that the Holy Day of Siwaratri is full of Self-reflection meaning.

"If we are not vigilant, we become negligent, if negligent we lose, losing means suffering. Then there is upawasa, that is fasting, to be able to distinguish between good and bad. For example, if we eat until the tongue finds it delicious, after it enters [the body], it's not [relevant]. So we can choose what is nutritious and caloric," he said.

Additionally, there is the practice of mono brata or silence, which teaches awareness in speaking and acting.

"So that we speak positive things. Well, this is our way not to penetrate sins, but to strengthen the awareness of the faithful," he said.

With a concept combining spiritual journey, culture, and modern tourism, the Prambanan Shiva Festival 2026 transforms into an experiential destination, not merely a stopover. For young travelers seeking meaningful journeys, Prambanan offers more than just scenery; it presents stories, values, and reflection.
