2026 FIFA World Cup will not only act as the competitive stage for the world's 48 best national teams, but also serve as a moment of recognition for players who have built lasting legacies throughout the history of this global football tournament.
FIFA has officially launched the FIFA World Cup Legacy Patch. This special badge will be worn by players who have appeared at five or more separate World Cup finals tournaments. Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), and Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico) are the first three players confirmed to receive this special honour.
Now aged 38, Messi, 41 year old Ronaldo, and 40 year old Ochoa all made their very first World Cup finals debut together at the 2006 tournament hosted in Germany.

"The FIFA World Cup Legacy Patch will honour the iconic contributions of this tournament's greatest legends: players competing at their fifth, or even sixth World Cup. This includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Guillermo Ochoa, all three of whom are set to make history with their sixth World Cup finals appearance," stated FIFA's official website.
For Messi and Ronaldo, the 2026 World Cup will open the latest chapter of their rivalry that has spanned nearly two full decades. Both players have shattered countless individual records, lifted football's most prestigious trophies, and will now once again share the global stage as the most experienced players in World Cup history.
Ochoa meanwhile has demonstrated consistent excellence as one of Mexico's all time finest goalkeepers. This veteran shot-stopper has been an irreplaceable core part of El Tri's journey on the international football stage.
Beyond these three players, FIFA will also award the same Legacy Patch to athletes set to make their fifth World Cup appearance. This group includes Yuto Nagatomo (Japan), Luka Modrić (Croatia), and Manuel Neuer (Germany).
Nagatomo and Neuer both made their World Cup debut at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Modrić on the other hand first appeared at the World Cup back in 2006, the same debut edition as Messi, Ronaldo and Ochoa.
The veteran Croatian midfielder was very nearly on track to match Messi and Ronaldo's total tournament appearance count, however Croatia failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals, which caused Modrić to miss that entire edition.
Alongside honours for established legends, FIFA has also introduced a dedicated special badge for first-time World Cup players. High profile athletes in line to wear this debut patch include Lamine Yamal (Spain), Florian Wirtz (Germany), and Erling Haaland (Norway).
This emerging new generation will share the tournament stage alongside the veteran legends. This blend of hard-earned experience and raw young talent will become one of the biggest defining attractions of the 2026 World Cup.
In addition to the Legacy Patch and Debutant Patch, FIFA has also revealed a dedicated visual honour marker for players who have previously won individual awards at past World Cup tournaments.
"Players making their first ever World Cup appearance will wear the FIFA World Cup Debut Patch. Meanwhile, players who have previously won individual World Cup honours including the Golden Boot, Golden Ball and Golden Glove will receive formal recognition via a dedicated gold honours patch," confirmed FIFA.
These new initiatives add both historic and emotional weight to every single match at the 2026 World Cup. Supporters will now be able to instantly recognise both players who have built enormous legacies throughout the competition's history, and those just beginning their journey on the world stage.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, officially kicking off on 12 June 2026. The opening fixture will pit Mexico against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, scheduled for 02:00 WIB on Friday 12 June.
