The night the Indonesia National Team secured victory over Oman at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta last Friday meant far more than just the final 3-0 scoreline. Amid the roaring cheers of fans celebrating the end of a long winless drought against Oman, a new historic milestone was born for Indonesian Football.
This record was set by Mathew Baker. The young talent who currently plays for Australian club Melbourne City has officially become the youngest ever debutant in Indonesia National Team history, taking the pitch at just 17 years and 23 days old.
This historic moment arrived in the 80th minute, when head coach John Herdman brought Baker on to replace team captain Rizky Ridho. That substitution only gave Baker a handful of minutes on the pitch, but it carries immeasurable weight for the trajectory of his career.

For Herdman, this opportunity was never just a symbolic gesture. He regards Baker as a player who rightfully earned the chance to experience the atmosphere of international Football with the senior Garuda Squad.
"He absolutely deserved this chance to take the field, and I am proud. This is a moment to be celebrated," Herdman stated during the post-match press conference at SUGBK.
The English coach made no attempt to hide his pride watching one of Indonesia's young talents write a new entry in the national team record books.
"Right now, he is the youngest player in Indonesia's history to ever step onto the pitch for the senior national team," he added.
Fielding Baker forms part of Herdman's core philosophy for building the national team's long-term future. He maintains that talented young players must be given early competitive experience in order to reach their maximum potential.
The 57-year-old coach believes exposure to international level Football accelerates a player's maturation across every area: technical skill, mental resilience, and tactical understanding of the game.
To illustrate his approach, Herdman cited the example of Kevin Diks. Now 29, this defender made his professional debut at 17 years old, before progressing to compete in Germany's Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Herdman also referenced two players he coached during his tenure with the Canadian national team: Jonathan David and Liam Millar, both of whom earned their first senior international caps at 18 years old.
Jonathan David has since grown into one of Canada's most important players, having scored dozens of goals for his country. Liam Millar meanwhile has developed into an influential first team player for Hull City.
Herdman asserts this same development model can be applied to young Indonesian players who possess the quality and competitive mentality to perform at the highest level.
"The younger they gain experience with the national team, the greater their chance will be to advance to the next tier of professional football," Herdman stated.
While Mathew Baker's debut may have only lasted a few short minutes on the pitch, this small first step could mark the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Stepping out in front of tens of thousands of supporters at Gelora Bung Karno and experiencing the atmosphere of a senior international fixture is a priceless opportunity that very few young players ever receive.
