Indonesia continues to strengthen its position as one of the premier tourist destinations in Asia. From mist-cloaked mountains in East Java to exotic beaches across Eastern Indonesia, these locations are steadily capturing the attention of International Tourists searching for distinctive holiday experiences.
The Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) confirmed that trends for Foreign Tourist Arrivals to Indonesia show positive growth, most notably from Asian nations including South Korea, China, Singapore, and Malaysia.
Remarkably, each visitor market holds unique travel preferences, which has created a diverse landscape of favored destinations across the country.

Ni Made Ayu Marthini, Deputy for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, explained that perceived comfort is one of the core reasons tourists select Indonesia as their holiday destination.
"They do not choose other countries. They come to Indonesia because it feels welcoming here. Visitors can also easily shop for souvenirs for their families and access many other practical conveniences," stated Marthini during an event in Jakarta.
This comfort factor is not limited only to the warmth of local communities. It also stems from the ability to access every type of Travel Experience within one single country: nature excursions, cultural immersion, culinary tours, shopping, and adventure activities are all available across Indonesia's regions.
For tourists arriving from Malaysia, preferred destinations are generally major urban centers that offer city tourism and shopping experiences. Jakarta and Bandung rank as the two most visited cities for this market, thanks to their extensive shopping malls, local food scenes, and wide range of authentic Indonesian souvenirs.
Additionally, Bali, Bintan and Batam also remain top choices for Malaysian tourists, due to straightforward travel access and the variety of leisure activities offered at these locations.
Tourists from Singapore meanwhile hold different priorities. This visitor group tends to seek out destinations with dramatic natural scenery, visually appealing environments for photography, and hands-on adventure travel experiences.
One of Indonesia's greatest attractions for Asian tourists is its intact tropical natural heritage. Mountain regions hold particular allure, especially for Singaporean Tourists and visitors from China.
"Their home countries do not have mountains like ours. Even in China, there are no tropical volcanic landscapes the way we have here. That is a huge unique selling point for our tourism industry. This is exactly why Mount Bromo and Ijen have blown up in popularity for the Chinese market," she added.
This statement explains why the Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater region in East Java has remained the most in-demand destination for Chinese tourists for multiple consecutive years.
Volcanic terrain layered with morning mist and rare natural phenomena delivers a travel experience unmatched by any other destination across Asia.
Beyond East Java, other locations across Indonesia are also recording rising foreign visitor numbers. For example, Manado has grown rapidly in international awareness after direct flight routes were launched connecting the city with Guangzhou, China.
As transport connectivity improves, previously lesser-known regions are now beginning to appear on official International Travel destination lists.
Alongside Manado, territories in Eastern Indonesia are also showing very promising growth. Labuan Bajo, Lombok, and the Gili Islands are prime examples of destinations that continue to rise in popularity among international travellers.
This trend confirms that foreign tourists are no longer focused exclusively on Bali. Visitors are now actively seeking new experiences by exploring lesser-travelled destinations that offer unspoiled nature, authentic local culture, and quieter, less crowded atmospheres.
Against this positive backdrop, the Ministry of Tourism recorded a shift in foreign visitor demographics at the start of 2026. Arrival numbers from the Middle East and Europe recorded a decline, while visitor volumes from Southeast Asia, other Asian regions, Oceania, and Africa all showed consistent upward growth.
To sustain this positive momentum, the government is scaling up Tourism Promotion via travel agent partnerships, digital campaign initiatives, and social media platforms — which are now the leading source of travel inspiration for tourists worldwide.
