Jonatan Christie is moving ever closer to his dream of claiming a title in front of his home supporters. Indonesia's leading men's singles Badminton athlete has secured his spot in the Indonesia Open 2026 semi-finals after eliminating Japan's representative Yushi Tanaka in the Quarter Final stage.
Competing in front of home fans at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Jonatan - widely known by his nickname Jojo - took a straight games victory with final scores of 21-19 and 24-22.
This result advances Jojo to the semi-final round of the BWF Super 1000 tournament, while opening up a clear opportunity to progress to the championship match. To reach the final however, Jojo will first need to defeat Thailand men's singles player Teeraratsakul Panitchaphon in the semi-final fixture.

During the Quarter Final clash, Jojo initially struggled to handle Tanaka's gameplay, falling behind 10-11 at the first game interval.
After the mid-game break, Jojo gradually found his optimal playing rhythm. He worked back from the deficit to level scores at 17-17, before closing out the opening game with a 21-19 win.
At the start of the second game, Jojo suffered from lapses in focus, leaving him unable to properly defend against multiple attacking shots from his opponent.
Despite this slow start, he managed to turn the momentum ahead of the interval to take an 11-10 lead. This advantage became a critical foundation as the match moved towards its decisive closing phase.
Following the interval, both players exchanged lengthy, high-intensity rallies. Tanaka applied constant offensive pressure, while Jojo fought to maintain consistent, controlled play.
The match grew increasingly tense as scores remained deadlocked right through to the final points. Under this high-pressure situation, Jojo demonstrated his Champion calibre and mental strength to secure the second game 24-22.
Speaking after the match, Jojo noted that court conditions had shifted slightly compared to previous competition days, requiring constant on-court adjustment.
"I had to keep readjusting all the way through both the first and second set, because the court felt a little different to the last couple of days. It really took a lot of adapting, this wasn't an easy match at all - Yushi also performed very well today," Jojo stated post-match.
This victory over Tanaka reinforces Jojo's dominant head-to-head record against the Japanese player. From four career meetings between the pair, Jonatan has now recorded three wins with only one defeat.
This positive momentum will prove valuable ahead of the upcoming semi-final duel. For Jojo, the semi-final fixture presents another chance to keep alive his ambition of lifting the Indonesia Open trophy in front of his home crowd.
