The 22nd week of the 2025/2026 Premier League delivered a major surprise. Three top teams, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, all failed to secure victories, intensifying the competition at the top of the table in the second half of the season.

Liverpool once again had to settle for a share of the points when they hosted Burnley at Anfield Stadium on Saturday, 17th January 2026. Despite dominating the match, The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by the visiting team, who are fighting to escape the relegation zone.

Arne Slot's squad controlled the match with 73% possession. Liverpool even had a golden opportunity from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute after Cody Gakpo was fouled in the box. However, Dominik Szoboszlai failed to complete his duty as the executioner.

The deadlock was finally broken just before halftime. A scramble in front of the Burnley goal was capitalised on by Florian Wirtz, putting Liverpool ahead in the 42nd minute. Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long. Burnley equalised in the 65th minute through a finish by Marcus Edwards, who received a pass from Florentino Luis.

This draw marks Liverpool's fourth consecutive one in the Premier League. The single point keeps them in fourth place in the standings with 36 points. Meanwhile, Burnley remains stuck in 19th place with 14 points.

Arsenal suffered a similar fate. Visiting Nottingham Forest at The City Ground early Sunday morning WIB, 18th January 2026, The Gunners failed to capitalise on their dominance and had to settle for a goalless draw.

Arsenal played aggressively from the start, enjoying 60% possession and eight shot attempts. However, Forest's compact defence and the solid performance of goalkeeper Mats Sels meant all the visitors' chances came to nothing.

Several golden opportunities arose through Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka, but none resulted in a goal. The score remained goalless until the final whistle.

Despite failing to win, Arsenal still leads the standings with 50 points, seven points clear of Manchester City in second place. Nottingham Forest itself stays in 17th place with 22 points.

Meanwhile, Manchester City suffered the worst result of the week. Visiting Old Trafford, The Citizens fell 0-2 to their city rivals Manchester United, now managed by interim coach Michael Carrick.

After a goalless first half, City couldn't withstand United's rapid counter-attacks. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for the hosts in the 65th minute, before Patrick Dorgu doubled the lead 11 minutes later.

City tried to chase the game, but the solidity of United's defence meant efforts from Erling Haaland and his teammates were constantly thwarted. This defeat prevented City from closing the gap on Arsenal, leaving them with 43 points.

In other matches, West Ham United snatched a dramatic 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur's ground. Callum Wilson scored the decisive goal in the 90th+3 minute, giving The Hammers a chance to escape the relegation zone.

Chelsea also returned to winning ways after defeating Brentford 2-0 with goals from Joao Pedro and a Cole Palmer penalty. Meanwhile, Sunderland secured a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace and moved into mid-table.

These results confirm the intense competitiveness of this season's Premier League. The failure of City, Arsenal, and Liverpool to secure three points proves that every week holds surprises, even for the top teams.
